We are invited to a 1 year old boy's birthday party this weekend and need to bring something to go in a "time capsule" that will be opened at the boy's 21st birthday. Need some ideas. I thought it was a great idea- this kid will already have plenty of "toys and stuff" from grandparents etc. I was trying to think of something that represents 2011.

A current newspaper, magazine (maybe a car magazine), a homemade dvd of what life looks like outside-cars, people, storefronts, catalog with prices.

CD's representing popular music....let's say Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber....haha

World Almanac For Kids is a neat book with all kinds of information about the current year. We use it in our elementary school library. The 2011 edition would have the 2010 information, just like the adult version.

How about something stating the Superbowl winner? That might be fun.. it will be different, too. I can only assume that a lot of people will bring something generic like a newspaper, a CD, a magazine, etc.

That's a really cool idea! How about a (no longer usable) cell phone or ipod, if you've got an old one laying around.

Depending on your time and creativity, you could make a small photo album. It could be elaborate, or just some photos in an envelope.

I did one for my girls for the Year 2000. I made pictures of things around town, so they could look back and see what the world was like then. It's amazing how much things have changed in just 11 years. I made pictures of our house, our cars, the gas station (with the price of gas), our grocery store, church, school, etc.

A christmas ornament. At least it would have a lasting value. Really, what 21 year old is going to give a hoot about the newspaper or music from the year they were born?

What a great idea. My kids would have loved that. They like to hear stories about when they were babies.

I would put in some information about a local college, costs, etc. to see how they change over time seeing that most likely the 21 year old will be in college then--although that might be depressing :lmao:

I would certainly put in information about what is going on in Egypt right now and other articles about prominent news stories. I would laminate those so they preserve well.

Put in an ad from a local grocery store to compare food price changes over the years.

How about an individual stock certificate-Disney or whatever along with current stock prices.

A popular music CD

I love the idea of the old cell phone :thumbsup2 . I don't know how big of a box they are using but an old computer or laptop might be interesting too.

What a fun idea!

You could make a list of current prices for common items, like a postage stamp, gallon of milk, gallon of gas, movie ticket, etc.

Or add some photos from the big snowstorm in early Feb. (if you live in an area that was affected)

I like the idea of the Kids Almanac because it would show 2010 so the year they were born.

I also like the idea of a list of current prices ... you could make it very nice looking and laminate it. Kind of like those things they have in the fliers from the newspaper from the year you were born.

From personal experience, the gift of stock is also the gift of upgrading from the 1040 EZ to the 1040 or 1040A.

I'd do a picture album of pictures around town, including 'sale prices' in the grocery and/or drug store. You wouldn't need to do a scrapbook, just take a whole bunch of pictures. (I wouldn't do a video because it would be dependent on current technology - which might be obsolete 21 years from now.)

If you're really close to the family, I'd also include a personal letter.

What a great idea! DD's first birthday is Sunday. I wish I had thought to ask people to bring something with them, but maybe DH and I can get some things together for her... gas prices. that one's a doozy!

So I ended up going out to do some errands with DD and took our camera along to take some pictures of things for a time capsule. I took pictures of a local movie theater, what movies were showing, and some of the movie posters. A gas station, and what the prices were, one of our local plazas and the stores that are there now, the street that we live on (it's pretty small), our house, my car, our surround sound set up in our family room (I'm sure that will be pretty different in 20 years!) oh, the Tim Horton's drive thru menu :lmao: I stopped to get a coffee. This is fun! Thanks OP! I know you were looking for ideas but now I'm having all kinds of fun!

One of those recordable photo albums.

My DD12 just found one we made for Daddy for a business trip when they were toddlers. My kids got a kick out of hearing all the baby talk and giggles coupled with pictures from that month:goodvibes Just too cute!
