Need song/hymn suggestions for a Memorial Service/Celebration of Life

Thanks everyone! These are awesome suggestions. I have a lot to bring with me tomorrow to my meeting with the minister who will be doing the service.

I love "Over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole...stunning version of a stunning song. I'll never forget when they played that on ER when Dr. Greene died. Also Eve Cassidy's version of "Rainbow" or maybe some of her other music (like Songbird).

How about the ending song from IllumiNations "We Go On"?

agnes!

Maybe Amazing Grace. I'll Fly Away. My pastor's favorite song is Jesus Loves Me

My three favorites are:

In the sweet bye and bye (my absolute favorite)
Amazing grace
I can only imagine

Very sorry for your loss.

Here are two suggestions.. both sung by Josh Groban

To Where You Are
You Raise Me Up

My mom and dad's church does not like secular music during the service, but on occasion they do make exceptions. Before the service starts or perhaps even after the service at the 'reception' that we will have in the fellowship hall might be a good spot for Allison's song.

As for too much music....Mom was a music teacher and there was ALWAYS music in our home. Dad specifically said that Mom wanted as much music as possible in her service. Precious Lord will definitely be included as will How Great Thou Art. As for another hymn, that has yet to be determined.

Mom always said that she wanted her service to be 'stories and songs'.....so we will try to do just that.

Thank you all for your kind words. Mom's passing was not entirely unexpected as she was in very poor health for many years. It was sudden and shocking but we are all at peace because now she is.

Linda

Your mom sounds like a lovely lady. I'm sorry for your loss. Incidently, my mother feels the same way about black. She won't wear black at all. She swears she's going to come back and haunt us if we wear black at he funeral.

A great song on the loss of a mom is Mark Schultz When You Come Home

My first day of recess
They all laughed at me
When I fell off the swing set
And scraped up my knee

The nurse called my Momma
To say I'd be late,
And when she gave me the phone
I could hear Momma say
"I'm so sorry, son.
Oh I think you're' so brave"

And she was smilin when she said:

When you come home,
No matter how far,
Run through the door
And into my arms
It's where you are loved,
It's where you belong
And I will be here
When you come home

I waved good-bye through the window
As I boarded the plane,
My first job in Houston
Was waiting for me

I found a letter from Momma
Tucked in my coat
And as I flew down the runway
I smiled when she wrote:
I'll miss you, son,
You'll be so far away

But I'll be waiting for the day

When you come home
No matter how far,
Run through the door
And into my arms
It's where you are loved,
It's where you belong,
And I will be here
When you come home

Well, I don't think
She can hear you now,
The doctor told me
Your mother is fading,
It's best that you leave

So I whispered,
I love you
And then turned away.
But I stopped at the door
When I heard Momma say,
I love you, son,
But they're callin me away

Promise me before I go

When you come home,
No matter how far,
Run through the door
And into my arms;
It's where you are loved,
It's where you belong,
And I will be here
When you come home,
When you come home.

I thought of another one... this is a secular song by the group Venice.

Family Tree

(Michael Lennon, John Vester, Kipp Lennon,
Mark Lennon)

Branches in the wind
Still standing here together
One more storm to weather
We'll get through it yet
So we're gathered here
Holding on to each other
To let go of another one we won't forget

Now as we say goodbye
To one of our own
We may be lonely
But we're not alone
Though the leaves will fall
And the tears will flow
May it always comfort us to know
The family tree will always grow

Father down to son, mother to daughter
Thicker than water, we are made of this
From the Earth we rise
To the Earth returning
We'll keep a candle burning
For the ones we'll miss

And when we say goodbye
To one of our own
We may be lonely
But we're not alone
Though the leaves will fall
And the tears will flow
May it always comfort us to know
The family tree will always grow
It's stronger than the wind can blow
The family tree will always grow

Give Me Jesus by Fernado Ortega or Jeremy Camp does a little different version of this.

I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack

Lifesong by Casting Crowns

I Hope You Dance was played at my Aunts service.

This song was playing in the car when we were on our way to my in-laws' house after my DFIL died and it always reminds me of him. I also always seem to hear it when there's "something" going on & I'd like to think that it's him trying to tell me that he wants to help me or at least support me.

I was at a funeral recently where this was shared and I thought you might like it:

Gone From My Sight
by Henry Van ****

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone"

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

And that is dying...

Death comes in its own time, in its own way.
Death is as unique as the individual experiencing it.

I found it very comforting.

Henry Van D yke is the author. The banned words thing asterisked it out.
