I'm driving in early for our October trip so that I can get in one last visit to Universal on my AP. I have one night (October 4) booked at the Portofino Bay Resort. I'll be visiting both parks on the 4th and 5th.

I'm planning on driving the 11 hours in one day (October 3) and need a CHEAP (to offset the $$$ at PBR) hotel just for that night. I'm arriving late and will be leaving very early so I don't care about the amenities or location although proximity to Universal would be a plus. I'm thinking around $40-$50.

Hubby arrives late on the 5th and we'll be checking into Disney for the rest of the trip.

Thanks!

There is a Hyatt right across from Universal, you can check their prices on their site or go through expedia, hotwire or something.. We stayed there for our Universal visit, it was nice, clean, had free breakfast and I think free wifi and a decent pool..

Thanks, but the Hyatt Place is about twice what I want to spend. I don't need to be near Universal, even the outskirts of Orlando would be fine! I'd guess I'm looking for would be more low end-like a Super 8! I don't need a pool or breakfast, just a clean bed. I don't expect to arrive before 8:00 PM and plan to check into PBH the next morning in time for early entry to WWOHP :-)

I personally would recommend the name your own price option on priceline. I had great success last October and got a 3 1/2 star room for $42 a night for a Wednesday - Saturday stay right by Downtown Disney. You would probably want to pick the Universal area, but I've had really good luck with priceline for the Orlando area. During off season, they just have so many rooms they want to fill that you can get a great bargain. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Try La Quinta Inn & Suites Orlando Convention Center. 8504 Universal Blvd Orlando, FL 32819. Rooms often start in $50 range. Always clean, safe & cheap. Include a cont. breakfast. They offer AAA & senior discounts as well. We stay here often when were just doing one night to sleep and shower. It's about a 10 min drive to Universal.

How about one of the La Quinta hotels in the area? Though I haven't stayed at an Orlando La Quinta, they're generally fairly basic lodging. I see the La Qunita Convention Center hotel on Universal Blvd. and the La Quinta International Drive hotel on Jamaican Court at $55 for your date. Both of those hotels are about the same distance from Universal Studios (two miles or so).

(Edited to add that I was typing while Macprincess was posting on the same hotel brand so I guess this one is a "second" to that suggestion.)

I might look at lastminutetravel.com or hotwire for a good deal. I booked the Hampton Inn at Lake Buena Vista for $56/night (don't remember how much tax there was) - there are other good deals in the $40 range. With lastminutetravel - you can see photos of the hotel and pretty much can figure out which hotel you'll be getting. If you decide to use hotwire or priceline betterbidding.com is a good resource. Good luck!:)

Thanks for the suggestions!

I am looking at both Hotwire and Lastminutetravel. I'm afraid of Priceline below the 4* level. I don't mind something very plain, all I really need is a bed and a shower, but I have major dirty hotel issues. The selection at Hotwire and LMT is better for September so I'm hoping more will open up for October next month. Of course I could just change to the Royal Pacific and use that savings to upgrade for my cheapo night but I just love the pools at PBH! I'll be solo that day and have this image of going to the parks in the mornings and spending the afternoon poolside with a frozen cocktail. The pool at Jambo House is lovely but it does tend to get busy.

Thanks again!

Keep a watch out what hotels that come on travelzoo.com they amazing deals.

We stayed in a Ramada Inn on Irlo Bronson in November for 1 night. We arrived late (around 8pm) and didn't want to spend alot either. We spent only $35 for the night and it was a super fabulous resort complete with an inside pool, karaoke and an awesome restaurant with a buffet. My kids were on cloud :cloud9:!! We went to bed around 10:30 and checked out around 7am the next morning so we could check into our Disney resort!

Just a thought!

Buena Vista Suites provides a good rate that includes breakfast if you mention mousesavers. I think it's $89 for a 1 BR suite which when you add in Bkfst is a pretty decent deal.

My family just stayed there and the place was clean and breakfast was decent.

I have done Priceline for hotels near Universal the last few years and been really pleased. Each time, I bid on 3* or better in the Universal area. 2009, we got Hyatt Place Universal for $30/night. 2010, we got a Ramada Inn about 5 minutes from Universal for $40/nigh. This year, we got Holiday Inn Maingate to Universal for $45/night. Both Hyatt PLace and Holiday Inn were right across the street.

Whoah~how do you 'upgrade' to a Loew's hotel? We just stayed at PBH, loved, loved the pizza at Sal's but would gladly welcome suggestions on staying onsite again. at any of the hotels. LRP and PBH fav, HR seemed ok.

I just booked Rodeway Inn Maingate for Oct 2 for 25 plus tax. I hope its not a dump. Like you, just needed a bed for a few hours as we will be arriving around 1 am and want to be at MK for opening.

Someone told me that the Champion's Gate as a room sale on... it might be worth checking out, it is a very nice hotel
