Hey there WISHERS, I hope everyones summer training is going well, mine just seems to be getting earlier to try to avoid the heat :confused3

Anyway I need some advice from you all,:worship: I am planning on doing the Mickey in '10 and am in pre training right now which is going really well, it will be my first full marathon and I am very excited, but I keep getting this crazy idea that I want to do the Goofy,:rotfl: I wanted to run both then my boss/best friend/surrogate sister told me I was crazy and I kinda agreed and put it out my mind. But this morning I went for a nice long walk (my training program has 1 walk day and 4 run days 2 rest right now) and I started thinking "maybe I could walk the half and then run the marathon as planned." Now my boss/friend/sister has once again told me that I am crazy and if I get hurt and can't run the full I will be devastated, and she is right I would be... but what if I didn't get hurt? I can't help thinking if I train for it I will be OK and soooo proud of myself. Since my friend is not a runner I am turning to you guys, I am a healthy, fit and determined 21 yr old and if I want to complete something I usually do but am I being stupid here? :confused3

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated :cutie:

Thanks Kirsty :thumbsup2

I would say if you continue with your training for the marathon, adding the half for the Goofy would be fine. I know of several people who did the Goofy as their first marathon.

I would add go slow and easy for the half to save energy for the full. You could run/walk the half if you are worried about cuts.

I have done the goofy 4 times with the longest training day being 13 miles. Last year it was only 11 miles. Trust your head and listen to your body!

See you at the start of both races in Jan!

I don't think you're crazy, Kirsty! I've actually been considering the same thing, and I was planning on doing my first full marathon in January, as well. However, as I'm training for my second half marathon at the end of the month, I'm realizing just how (and I never thought I'd ever be saying this) short the half marathon distance can feel, if you take it slow and easy. I think for me, the big difference is that I am training with the Arthritis Foundation's Joints in Motion team for the upcoming local full and half marathon and, in our chapter, pretty well all the half marathoners are walkers, so I end up doing the marathon-length training runs with the runners, because we're going at the same pace and I get chatting with them, and then don't turn around at the half marathon distance point. So, I've ended up basically running a half marathon or longer every weekend, in preparation for a half marathon, and my body really doesn't mind. So I feel like, as long as I took the WDW half at a slow training speed and likely walked some of it, I would be fine doing the full the next day.

Besides, there's full marathons on all the time anywhere, but it's only at WDW that you can do the Goofy! So far my fiance has convinced me I'd be crazy, but I'm still considering signing up. We'll see....

On that note, I've read that you can apply your full marathon registration towards your Goofy registration, if you decide to do it. Anyone know how to go about doing that?

I know.....according to the emailed directions I received a couple of days ago from Disney Sports you need to submit a paper application. In my case to upgrade from a half to Goofy I needed to mark the application as applying for the full and under the payment section put $125 by the marathon and $40 by the Goofy - the additional $165 payment, combined with the $120 I already paid equals the Goofy price of $285. I also included a note (and wrote on the application itself) that I was upgrading from a half to Goofy. To upgrade from a full to the Goofy you'd mark the application for the half, mark the $120 cost by the half, and the balance by Goofy, making sure you clearly label it as an upgrade.

I think there are a lot of us crazy folks out there!! Hope to see you there!!

Thanks for the info guys, I am seriously considering going for it!!! Sarah-Rose I think you should to, I am liking the idea of proving the people wrong who are now saying I am crazy, and liking the 3 medal thing a little too!

What is the best way to train for a newbie? shall I just always do a 1/2 distance of the distance I will be doing on my long sunday one?

I figure as long as I finish the 1/2 it doesnt matter how slow I take it, I have 2 1/2's in Nov and a 10k and 13k planed for October, so if I want to do PR's I can do them then and just amble along in the 1/2 in Jan to save myself for the full!

OOOH I am excited now!

Any helpful hints for an over enthusiastic newbie will be greatly appreiciated!

TTFN guys and see you at both starts (and finishes!) in Jan.

Kirsty

Arghhh I guess I am really doing this! :cool1:

If Goofy is at 85% how long do you think I have left to register, I could do with saving the money till I have to spend it but I dont want to miss out on registering :scared1:

Thanks for your encouragements guys :lovestruc

It took about 3 weeks to go from 80% to 85%. I would figure using that and adding "panic" registration at 90%+ level, you have at least a few weeks but I would watch carefully. Especially if you are mailing in your app. It will take longer to process(mailing time, sorting, etc) vs. online reg.

See you in Jan!

Pat: WTG on Goofy!!!

DH and I are also planning to walk the half then run the full. Welcome to the gang of crazy people :cool1:

I figure this way I can stop and take pictures with the characters and enjoy the course for the 1/2 then focus more on time for the full.

Kirsty!!! Welcome and all the best in your training and making your decision!!! :cheer2::cheer2:

PAT!!!!! Are both you and Jim doing the Goofy?!!?!? Your registered now?!?!? Oh my!!! I didn't know you were thinking about this too! Did Susie get to you?

Wow all your guys encouragements are making me even more excited, thanks guys!

Oh and I hope we all get to meet sometime during the weekend :goodvibes

See you all there :thumbsup2

Kim asked the question about Goofy training tips in this thread http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2203056. There are some good replies that might help you whether you run or walk.

Having done my first marathon as a Goofy participant and that being the year I turned 55, planning to do my 5th Goofy in 2010, the year I turn 60, I think I can encourage all you young things to get it done!

Be mindful that you have to train for the full and that is a time commitment.

Jim is going to stick with HAPPY - doing the 5K, doing the half, and volunteering for the full.

I am doing Dopey. Yep, Susie got to Anne, who got to me:lmao:

I'm sure you can do it if you put your mind to it Kirsty, I've been told runners are stubborn like that. I would say just do the full this year so you have the Goofy to train for next year though if you plan on running the events again in 2011. That way you get a new experience two years in a row.

Either way good luck.

WHOA! Hold the phone! Susie got to ANNE?!?!?! Exactly how did she get to Anne?!?!? Is Anne doing the Goofy too?

Lily!!! Thanks for posting that link I'm going to check it out too :thumbsup2 And I agree it's the time commitment you have to look at.

I recall someone else once asking if they should do the Goofy and the person (it's been a few months so I don't know who answered) replied that the Goofy Weekend is just that 1 Weekend. The training is what you have to look at if you can fit into your life leading up to it. Anyways that struck me as a very honest way to looking at if you can do the Goofy. Can I fit the time to train for it into my life and each of our lives are filled with different things and different needs/priorities.

All the best Kirsty and anyone else trying to decide!!! No matter what you decide we LOVE TO CHEER!!! So we'll be there cheering you on either running/walking next to you or from the Scream Teams along the coures :cheer2:

All I did was "slightly" encourage her! Honestly! :teeth: I told her it was a big decision and that I wouldn't sway her either way. What really shocked me was that she actually considered it. I told her that if she ever considered doing the Goofy, now would be the time - special medal and all. AND SHE SAID OK. :faint: The next thing I knew, she and Pat signed up for the event. :thumbsup2

Kirsty-Leigh and others thinking about doing the Goofy....if this old lady (meaning me) can even think about doing it, so can you! Sounds like you are training well already! You can do it! :cheer2: And we'll provide support along the way.

Hey everybody! Thanks for the information! I'm still flip-flopping on my own decision. I'm just wondering if, since I haven't done a full marathon before, it's more important for me to actually finish a marathon first and have an actual "time" for the event. If I did the Goofy, I know I would be much slower for both events (the half doesn't bother me at all because I've done a few halfs) and I know I'd be gutted if I didn't finish my first marathon because of the Goofy. As I said, I'm flip-flopping - one minute I'm all gung-ho about it, and the next I'm nervous. Doesn't help that the most support I'm getting from my fiance is a skeptical, "well, you can do it if you want..."

We'll see.... If not the Goofy, I'm definitely doing the marathon and I'll likely do the 5K, if I can manage to get to WDW on the Wednesday before the weekend.

Also, escape, I see that you'll be in my town for the Rock n Roll Seattle next week! :goodvibes I'm also doing the half, and it's so exciting to actually have WISHers in the Pacific Northwest! :rotfl:

Hey guys!

Well I did it I just booked in for my first Goofy challenge and I am so excited (and slightly terrified!:scared1:) but for the amount I just paid to run 39.3 miles there is no way I won't finish!

Thanks for all you support it really helped me make my decision (so I will blame you guys monday 1/11/10!!! :lmao:) and I can't wait to see you all at the start/finish lines :cool1:

Sarah-Rose: If you really want to do this then don't let anything stop you :goodvibes if you think this is the year you have time to train (and recover!) then maybe this is the year for you! I know what you mean about flip flopping between decisions, I even did it just before I pushed the button to send off the application. I finally made my decision through some logical thoughts i.e will I have time to train? can I do this? I am going to hurt myself? and then when I decided I could physically do it I though about how much I wanted it, and how jealous I would be of all those other people with their Goofy medals, and finally how proud I will feel when I cross that finish line! When I thought about that I knew I should do it! Good luck whichever decision you make :goodvibes

Kirsty

Kirsty, my dear, you're definitely swaying me on this! I know that my biggest factor is that I'm going to see all these people with Goofy medals after the full, and then I'm going to spend the next how long wondering if I could have done it! And I do definitely have time to train this year, whereas I don't know when I'll be able to commit to something like this again. My fiance and I are both Canadians, but I'm on a J-1 internship visa in the US right now, and my fiance is working in the US on a H1B working visa. When we get married next month, I will be a dependent on my husband's visa and won't be able to work (hence, tons of time to train this year!), so we're planning on using the opportunity to start a family next year. I know that that won't necessarily happen right away, but I couldn't register for the Goofy in the spring of the year before, knowing that there is a chance that I could be 8 months pregnant by the time Marathon Weekend comes around! So, I'm likely going to be WDW race-free for awhile after January 2010.

Hmmm..... I'm leaning more towards it.... it is a lot of money, but.... man, I want that Goofy medal!

Its very tempting isn't it!!!

I am also here on a J1, changing it to an F1 next yr. but I have no guarantee that I will be able to change it so if I want to do it, now is the time!

I say go for it Sarah, because when those babies start coming training will be a whole lot harder :thumbsup2

Plus I heard it was going to be a special Goofy medal for the 5th anniverary :cool1:

Kirsty

I just realized that you, Kirsty, came here looking for SANE advice??? What were you thinking??? You knew that there were bunches of us who were Goofy already!! :lmao:
