Does anyone have any suggestions about hosting a Luau for our 4th of July party this year. I know we will probably have some good music like the Beach boys and stuuf and we will definately be doing the limbo. But I don't want to leave anything out. We usually do a big thing every year with fireworks and about 150 people . What I am looking for is some ideas on food to serve cheaper the better , drinks to serve both alchol and none and also decorations to set the theme also cheaper the better. Thank you for any help you can offer and it's ok if you can't!:thumbsup2

I did a Survivor tiki/luau theme party for my son's high school graduation last year.

www.orientaltrading.com has TONS of decorations - very affordably priced. If you have a Party City store close by, they also have a huge selection of luau items.

We had a pig roast, fruit salad, etc. We don't drink, so I can't help you with alcoholic beverage ideas.

I bought the bamboo limbo set from OT and I also got a Surfer guy and girl photo cut out from somewhere online - there were holes to put your head through and it appeared that you were a buff surfer dude and a cute beach girl. The guests loved it! We had 70 and 80 year olds fighting to see whose turn it was next to get their photo taken! I also had 3 pinatas for the little ones, the elementary age kids, and the high school/college gang. We had pineapple and coconut bowling.

If you do a google search you'll get lots and lots of food ideas.

Have fun!:)

Suggestion - get some CD's of Hawaiian music. I love "IZ" (Israel Kamakawiwoole) among others.

If you have a Big Lots near you, you might want to check them out. The past couple of years they had a isle of Luau stuff that was very reasonable (and cute).

I'd definitely serve pineapple. My two favorite ways of eating it:

1. Keep the pineapple whole and cut around each little "shape" (hexagon, pentagon ? - can't picture them right now). Guest use the pokey thing from each section to pull it out and then dip it into caramel.

2. Halve a pineapple (with leaves still on) and cut out the middles. Cut into bite sized pieces, add almonds, and raisins, and place back into pineapple halves to serve from.

Oh, pineapple chunks are also really yummy when mixed with chopped bananas and a little confectioner's sugar sprinkled on top! :thumbsup2

Dollar Tree has drink umbrellas and leis, but you might be able to get them cheaper from Oriental Trading.

check out 'freecycle' for decorations. i ended up giving all mine away there a couple of years ago (and i see periodic postings for themed party stuff). check out goodwill or salvation army stores-lots of cheap serving dishes and often stuff brought back by people as souvineers from hawaii (great resource for tropical shirts and dresses as well:thumbsup2 ).

i went to the dollar store and bought cheap serving dishes and bowls for ours-they had a bunch that had fish themes. i've also seen people use little kid's plastic sand buckets (less than a dollar at wallmart) for chips and some salads.

honestly, i'm hard pressed to come up with many cheap food ideas-fruit and veggies would seem the natural suggestion but they've gotten so expensive  i'm thinking realy watch the ads for non perishable stuff when it's on sale. chips, sodas, juice boxes (for the little ones), sodas-get them on sale and hide them away. as for alcohol-i'm thinking so long as you provide some kind of tropical mixers (fruit punch, coconut based something...) you could just go with whatever liquor you normaly provide (if you drink beer or wine watch for the sales on that as well).

OH-just as a suggestion, if you have big groups and want a cheap and decorative means of keeping sodas, beer, juices cold-buy a few of the cheapo hard plastic kiddie pools (like $7.99 at walmart) and fill them with the ice and the drinks. they hold allot more than standard ice coolers and serve as an additonal decoration.

we bought styrofoam pillars at the craft store and poked the cut up fruit into it with toothpicks. It helps if you cover the strofoam with saran. We used the colored saran to make it more decorative. We also had a skirt decorating contest with crepe paper and tape:laughing:

Oh and don't forget the tiki torches! ;)

We went to a friend's block party last July 4 that was a luau. These neighbors pick one of their homes and have a big blowout a couple of times a summer. Now keep in mind this is a hard-partying group and for the host at least, money was not an issue.
1) they bought 15 tons of sand to put in the driveway. After the party they loaded it into a couple of pickups and had arranged for the city that they (the homeowner and neighbors) would put it on the beach at a local pond.
2) some of the guys in the neighborhood scavenged some extra plywood, etc. they had and actually built a tiki bar. They decorated it and that's where the drinks were.
3) our friend has a sirius satellite boombox and they played radio margaritaville on it all night long. Is Buffett more hawaiian than hawaiian music? No, but it's more party type music.
It was probably the most elaborate bash I've been to in quite a while. In fact, if the block party for our subdivision is on our street this fall, I may borrow the tiki bar.

We like Luau as a party theme. This year we are doing a take your webkinz to a luau party for my DD's 7th birthday.

I got a lot of stuff for Oriental trading company. Since it is for kids I plan to serve fruit salad and pizza (some with pineapple and ham, some plan.)

We have an adult Luau every summer. We are getting better and better each year but I will give you suggestions from what we have learned so far. I believe people have mentioned Oriental Trading, party city and Dollar Tree for decorations. They are both great and really useful. Dollar tree is a great place to get leahs but they are obviously pretty cheap ones, you can get them in bulk at OT and if you have 150 people you can probably get what you need from them.

We have bought paper lanterns and strands of lights and hung them around our back yard. That along with Tiki torches is great for the evening. You can even look at BIG LOTS for things. I found great table clothes last year there and even some lanterns. If you have any wicker type bowls, that looks great for serving things. We also did the big cut out surfer and hula girl, that was a lot of fun for everyone.

For food we do smoked pork shoulders. Last year we served some with BBQ and some with a Carolina vinegar recipe. I suggest getting crock pots out to store the pork in, that way the sauces stay warm with the pork. Some friends of ours take a pineapple and then get ham, turkey, cheeses, cherries, pineapple pretty much anything you think would go together and cut them up and skewer three items together, and then stick each skewer into the pineapple. (Don't peal the pineapple leave the skin on, it is just for decor. That is always a huge success. A lot of food in Hawaii is similar to Japanese so we have served an oriental cole slaw (or a regular one if desired). Fruit salads work along with the theme. There is a mango salsa out there, pineapple cake, My husband always serves SPAM with a sweat and sour sauce too. That is a Hawaiian favorite. There are tons of things you can serve and truthfully you can't go wrong. Just serve a good meat and maybe a couple regional dishes and the rest can be what ever you like.

Now there are the drinks. One year I served Blue Hawaiians but that got really expensive since it is mostly alcohol. There are Mia Tias but they can be pretty strong with Rum. My biggest hit was Rum slush. It is great because it has coconut rum and pineapple which are flavors you are looking for but you serve the slush with 7up over it to it helps expand the alcohol further. I also made a punch bowl for those non alcohol drinkers.

1-12oz can frozen Lemonade
1-12oz can orange juice
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 cups of strong tea
3 cups of pineapple juice
4 cups water
2 cups of coconut rum

Mix together and freeze.(you need to freeze for min 24 hours) when serving the drink pour 7up over the top.

This is a great beverage for a luau and a hot summer party.

Good luck with your party. I hope I have helped you out.party:

For Cheap drink do Tropical punch kool-aid for the kids & mix it with rum for the adults. Or do the blue lemonade for the kids seems to be the favorite with all the kids around here, that way they you have different colors for leaded & non-leaded.

We did a luau themed party a few years ago. I served fresh fruit marinated in Malibu rum, grilled chicken skewers with sate (peanut) sauce, grilled sausage, and (most popular of all) Hambuyakis (just mix sesame teriyaki sauce into your ground beef before shaping into patties).

Boy, I wish you lived near me. I could let you borrow everything you need. DH and I had an annual luau for years before DSs were born. Then last year both DS's decided to have a luau for their bday parties. Lots of decorations, like above mentioned Oriental Trading Company has great decorations..fish nets, shelss, tacky plastic lobsters..We bought the Limbo set from OTC, works great..Chubby Checker singing Limbo Rock is definitely a must, Hawaiin /Carribean music is easy to find. I used skewers of pineapple chunks grapes and cherries for the kids, for adult parties I quartered a fresh pineapple lengthwise, cut the pieces away, but left them in the "shell" for presentation..sprinkled them with some rum and toasted coconut. Also Crabmeat spread w/crackers, boiled shrimp.

Lots of skewerd food on the grill. LOL!

You have a lot good suggestion here! We also decorate with fishing nets, shells and starfish!:cool1:
