DD13 will be making her confirmation on Tuesday night. We were told at the rehearsal tonight that the bishop likes to interact with the kids during the ceremony and is likely to ask them some questions about the following:
1)7 sacraments
2)7 gifts of the holy spirit
3)7 corporal works of mercy

Unfortunately, we(and she) have no clue what these things are. She doesn't want to look like an idiot in front of the bishop so I hope some of you can help.

I believe the 7 sacraments are:
Baptism
Reconcilliation
Eucharist
Matrimony
Annointing the sick
and 2 other things I can't remember

I'm clueless on the rest. Please help!

Confirmation and ordination as a priest.
You'd think I would have remembered the confirmation one(being as that's what we'll be doing that night  )....Is the ordination as a priest called Holy Orders or something?

Thanks Dan, it's coming back to me now.

Anybody got any help on the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit or the 7 corporal works of mercy?

the 7 corporal works of mercy?
Ohhh, I googled it and found them:
7 Corporal Works of mercy

The seven acts of compassion and love by which we care for our neighbor's physical needs to:

1. To feed the hungry,
2. To give drink to the thirsty,
3. To clothe the naked,
4. To shelter the homeless,
5. To visit the imprisoned,
6. To visit the sick,
7. To bury the dead.

the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit
What are the gifts of the Holy Spirit received at Confirmation?

At Confirmation, we learn the implications of our new life in the Holy Spirit:

All powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
by water and the Holy Spirit
you freed your sons and daughters from sin
And gave them new life.
Send your Holy Spirit upon them
to be their helper and guide.
Give them the spirit of wisdom and [2] understanding,
the spirit of [3] right judgment and [4] courage,
the spirit of [5] knowledge and [6] reverence.
Fill them with the spirit of [7] wonder and awe in your presence.
(Rite of Confirmation)

Google is a wonderful thing!

Isn't it funny that I didn't think of Google, first? The first thing I thought of was the DIS! :rotfl2:

I amuse even myself. Guess we're all set now but I'd love to hear any confirmation stories or whatever you feel like sharing as we get ready for this day.

We're particularly annoyed(not in a bad way, just a grit your teeth and whine about it way) that our bishop doesn't do Confirmations on weekends, only weeknights, the ceremony starts at 7pm and is predicted to be a 2 1/2 hour ceremony as our Bishop is 75 years old and tends to ramble and likes to spend a lot of time talking to the kids. The head of religious education just shared all this with us tonight.

Seven Corporal Works of Mercy:

Feed the hungry
Give drink to the thirsty
Clothe the naked
Shelter the homeless
Visit the sick
Visit those in prison
Bury the dead

Seven Spiritual Works of Mercy:

Fortitude

Seven Deadly Sins, per Pope Gregory:

wow - you mean the Bishop can call on ANY of the kids? That seems like a lot of pressure.

Congrats to your daughter!

Yup!

And the funny thing is, he might not even ask. But they said he talks for about 20-30 mins while we're all seated in church, before he begins the confirmation and he likes to walk right up to the kids and ask things like "Which of the 7 gifts of the holy spirit do you think is most important" or "what world events are going on now that we should be praying about". DD is assigned a seat in the very first pew so the odds are high that he may speak to her. They also said that after annointing with the oil, he often asks the kids why they chose their saints name or who their sponsor is and why they picked them. DD wasn't at all nervous beforehand but she's petrified now!

I actually think it's cool that the bishop spends a little time with the kids, it makes it more personal~~BUT, it is a school night and it's going to be a loooong ceremony!

Just curious -- what have they been learning in their preparation classes? The Bishop may pose these questions because they are things someone making their Confirmation should know.

you want to be really annoyed. try going to mass and finding out there is confirmation at the mass. talk about a long mass.

ya know, these were my thoughts exactly! I asked DD about it and she says she knows they learned the sacraments and the 7 gifts but never heard of the corporal acts of mercy. And, eventhough they did learn it, it's not like they have tests in religious education class and the classes started way back in August so I guess she's probably forgotten as much as she's learned.

In looking this up tonight, I can see that the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit are pretty much the point of confirmation so it's very relevant.

I just wished the teachers would have done a little "refresher" class so the kids wouldn't be freaked out. Today's class was rehearsal, the week before they were off for spring break, the week before that they went to confession, so it's basically been a month since her last class. She only goes for 2 hours once a week.

Yeah, that would really put me over the edge! It's going to be long for me and my dd will actually be in it, I can't imagine if I didn't even know the candidates.

Didn't she learn these in Confirmation class? :confused3 We had to learn all of those. I am surprised your church allows children to be confirmed that don't know the basic facts of their faith.

See my explanation in post 15.

She's a 13 year old kid, yes, she probably learned it but it's been a while and she doesn't remember, my DH(who went to 12 years of Catholic school and was an altar server for many years) and I also learned it but don't remember. Did you remember them before everybody posted the answers?

Now she's worried because she just found out she may be put on the spot in front of a church full of people. We were just told this tonight and the ceremony is on Tuesday.

He's going to ask a question & call on someone with his hand up.

I have never heard of a Catholic Confirmation on a weekend. Do they have them in your area?
