So the new bed was delivered today! I'm so excited to sleep in it tonight! It's a queen, old one was a king.

But now I needed new sheets. I bought some 600 tc ones at Kohl's. Pretty brown color. Washed them today. Just put them on the bed and laid down and they feel all scratchy! They felt softer before I washed them. :( The 400 tc king ones I had felt so much better (but they didn't have those at Kohl's anymore...I got them YEARS ago).

I'm going to try them for a couple nights and see, but if they don't feel better, I'm taking them back. They were not cheap!

What sheets do you love? Preferably something that I don't have to order online since I need them for the bed now.

I usually go to TJMaxx (Homegoods) to get the sheets there.

I've purchased three sets of sheets there in the past couple of years--no specific brand:

1) 600 TC Egyptian cotton (I don't like sateen and stick with Egyptian cotton). They were great, strong, and soft. The downsize to the higher threadcount is that you get hot in the bed.

2) 400 TC Egyptian cotton. Had to decrease the threadcount because I'm getting too close to menopause and was getting hot at night.

3) Organic Cotton. I think the thread count is lower--like 300, but I'm going more for organic than the higher thread count this time. These sheets are a bit scratchy but they were good to have over the summer.

Good luck!

I've heard that higher thread counts can actually be of lower quality because to fit so many threads the thread is thinner and less durable. Sounds like that may be what happened to you. Try a 400 thread, hopefully the threads will be sturdier.

I bought some from Costco and love them. I have Egyptian cotton sheets that are soooooo soft and some sateen sheets that are col and crisp. Both were a little pricey but worth every penny.

You can fix your scratchy sheets. I did this for my son. Put a few tennis balls in the washer and dryer when you wash them. It took about three washings but they are soft now.

DD and DS have Lands End flannel sheets on their beds (just put on the flannel this week) and they are soooo soft. I can't wait to get some for my bed!

Also, if you take the sheets out of the dryer when they are still damp and then air dry them at the end, they will be much softer.

Check out landsend.com's Overstocks section. I love their sheets. They are sooo soft.

The last set I got at Kolh's are sandpaper as well. :confused3

I'll try the tennis ball idea, thanks.

:hippie:

The Amadeus sheets that you can buy through QVC are very nice. We love them.

I prefer flannel, especially this time of year. :)

A previous poster said she did not like the sateen --but I get the Wamsutta Sateen sheets from Linens and Things, and my husband and I really like them. They are VERY soft.

I love Target's Shabby Chic line... They are so crisp. They don't have as high a thread count as the Pottery Barn ones that I was so enamored with, but I actually like them better... (And they are A LOT cheaper).

I have heard that the threadcount can be misleading. The problem is that some sheets (most likely your 400 count) are woven with one thread over, one thread under - so they feel very soft. Once people started to prefer higher thread count, manufacturers found a way to list a higher thread count without selling the "traditional" higher threadcount sheets - the threads are grouped together instead of individual - so four or five threads bunched together instead of an individual thread. (Hopefully you understand what I mean. I'm having trouble coming up with a good way to explain it, but just picture an X but instead of one line making up each arm of the X there are four or five.) I know that the Sateen sheets are like this, but I don't know if those are the only ones. They actually end up feeling stiffer and rougher than lower threadcount sheets. You can actually tell by looking closely if your sheets are like that.

If you are looking for really soft, smooth sheets, look for the ones that don't have an artificially inflated threadcount. One way to tell - if the price seems to good to be true for a very high threadcount, they're probably not going to be as soft. Regardless of price, you can usually tell by looking closely if the sheets are the normal high threadcount or the newer artificially inflated threadcount.

I know you said you didn't want to order online, BUT...

Domestications.com has Satin Sheet Sets that are so reasonably priced ($39,99 any size) that I had to tell you about them. I bought these for all our beds and they have lasted 3 years and are washed once a week. The elastic still is snug to hold them in place and they are so comfortable. The color selection is great too and they don't fade. They are cool in the summer and I use them with my electric blanket from Hammacher Schlemmer (worth every penny), and I feel like a Queen while I'm sleeping!
Seriously, you should get a pair and the blanket too! (I just sent one back after 3 years it wasn't working properly and they sent me a brand new one for free).

A side note on the sheets in case you do get them (I put the top sheet shiny side down so you get the silky comfort on your body.

There was just another thread about sheets last week! :) DH and I love the Studio Wrinkle-Free 350 thread count sheets from JCPenney. They are silky-smooth. My only criticism is we don't like the choice of colors--our bedroom is done in tropical shades , and Studios blues and greens are greyed down and a bit muddy looking, so we always end up buying white.

You can buy them right off the shelf at JCPenney.

I personally will no longer buy sheets on line, because you just don't have any way of knowing what you're getting (a previous poster explained the problem with going by thread count, which finally explains to me why thread count seems so meaningless these days!).

A couple of years ago I bought 800 tc Egyptian cotton sheets on Overstock.com and they are wonderful! So soft and very durable.
