Our wonderful kittens, Alfie, Squirt, Prozac, Bro, and Baby Girl that were brought into this world by a very grateful-that-we-took-her-in Bertha have clawed a little section on my couch. It wasn't bad at all and would be easy to fix so that it wouldn't show but I didn't have the time yet to do it. Well, now it doesn't need to be fixed.... Harley, the dog that we took in and saved her from dying of Parvo as well as the car that hit her the next week has taken care of it. She has now pulled the little piece so that it is about 9 inches!!

Now I need some budget friendly but nice looking slipcovers before DD has the baby  in a couple weeks. I know there will be a lot of people over and I hate the look of my sofa now!! Any ideas would be appreciated!!

It all depends on where the rip is. If it is on the edge of the cushion then you could take a piece of fabric and "wrap" it, or several of them in the same fabric. If it is on the side of the arm part of the couch then you can take fabric that is wider/longer and wrap it. However if it is the front of the couch then it would be harder. You could still wrap a piece from under the front edge and put the cushions over it and then make some smaller pillows so it looks like it was a decorator decision...
Best of luck, with out a pic or knowing where the tear is it is hard to deside.
I would try and use sheets to do this, they are cheap, big pieces of fabric for a little money. And if you get the stretchy T shirt sheets they might be easier to fit on the couch.

I priced slipcovers everywhere for a long time and ended up getting mine from the Sure Fit outlet on eBay. They were the best price and were new.

I've gotten good deals in the past on slipcovers at Overstock.com

I've also just used king sized quilts at times, just tucking and fitting until just right. Actually they looked pretty good on there and fit the theme of my living room (at the time).

I got a great slip cover at Boscovs for $10! But I think it was just a right place at the right time kind of thing. But I would still check there, they always seem to have good deals and a nice selection.

I think I got the one for our sofa on jcpenney's outlet section online.

We have a t-cushion and it works very well with it.
