need some airport advice please...

We are from the east (near Pittsburgh) and are thinking of a vacation to DL and So Cal in 2009. What would be the best airport to fly into to easily get to/from both DL and San Diego area? We would probably do DL first and end hopefully beachside in So Cal. We have never really been to CA (I was once as a teenager on a guided tour) so any info can really help. I guess renting a car would be the best way to go. I know DL offers transportation to/from airport, but does the Four Seasons in Carlsbad?(hotel we are thinking of staying at) Then if we wanted to go to say Legoland, could the hotel get us there? Is there a better hotel option?

The southern Calif. residents can probably help more than I. I've only been once. We are flying into Long Beach, partly due to size and vicinity of that airport to Disneyland and due to it being the most cost effective (outside of LAX) at the time we booked. We are renting a van for the duration of our stay (7days) and we are planning on taking a long day trip down to San Diego. I know that probably doesn't help much but it will bump you up the list a bit also!

DL is about 95 miles from San Diego.

Long Beach is about 25 miles from DL and about 100 miles from SD.

The Four Seasons, Carlsbad does not offer shuttles to DL which is
about 60 miles away. They might offer shuttles to LegoLand which
is only 5 miles away.

The Los Angeles airport is probably the easiest but it’s the
busiest. Long Beach airport is nice and there’s always the John
Wayne Airport (SNA) in Santa Ana. It’s about 14 miles from DL.

Renting a car in the southern California area is probably the
right choice. The places you want to see are fairly spread out
and not easily accessible by airport and hotel shuttles.
