Well, M&P, I feel for you. I do believe that honesty is the best policy. halestrm seems to have given you the best advice about what to say, including what an interviewer's perceptions would be of what you say.
I'd go with that, and I'd probably add that while it has distressed me greatly, I really feel like things happen for a reason and that I am excited to undertake new challenges, learn new things etc. In other words, don't make the firing the whole focus of the interview...speak about it, reframe it into a positive (new challenges, learn new things etc), make sure you emphasize all the positives & accomplishments in all of your previous employments...don't just focus on the firing.
I left a job (not fired, but left under unpleasant circumstances...long story) and when asked, I simply stated my previous employer's values were becoming less & less aligned with my own, so I felt that it was time to look for new challenges and opportunities. Then I went on to tell them what I had accomplished in all my jobs, not just the most recent one.
FWIW, from your description of your previous work environment, it sounds like this is going to be a positive for you in the long run, even if it stinks right now. It must have been awfully difficult to go to work every day with the
thought hanging over your head "whew...made it through another day".
Best of luck!!
