And having taken a page from the DIS, all I can think of now is I hope they had the travel insurance which covers catastrophic incidents like this that help pay for helicopter evac, etc.

Glad he is getting the care he needs.

I was finally able to speak to my mother in law for a little while this evening. Hopefully they will know more on Sunday. She did mention, and we briefly discussed, that they did have the travel insurance so much of the expenses may very well be covered. She could not say enough nice things about Royal Caribbean. They assigned someone to stay with her the entire time, help her make all arrangements and also had someone meet her at each stop along the way to escort her on the next leg of her journey. She mentioned something about a speed boat from one small island to the larger island where she got on a small plane which was waiting to take her to Miami. I joked that she's been away playing James Bond. She said the ship doctor and staff were top notch and that within a matter of a minute or two, in the middle of the night, there were over 20 people in her room.

When I spoke with the ER last night before any of the family got there, they asked about insurance and medical history. I knew none of it but was able to reach out to FIL's doctor's office who immediately called the ER and provided all information they needed.

For as much as this has been horrible, and isn't over yet, it just seemed that all the stars aligned and everything fell in to place so that he has a very good prognosis. Stars aligning or family, friends and DISer prayers... you decide.

This morning brought a partial lung collapse (due to a cracked rib caused by the CPR compressions) and a blood transfusion to compensate for the loss caused by the stomach bleed. That was first thing Saturday morning. Since then all has been quiet so I'm assuming no news is good news.

Apparently he is doing very well. There is talk of removing his breathing tube today or tomorrow. He blood counts are all where they should be and the doctors continue to be amazed at his progress. Said the best place for this to have happened, believe it or not, was on the cruise because medical help arrived within 2 minutes. No way it would have happened that quickly were he home and, it's sad to say, we live one block from the ambulance company. Of course he's ornery and not being a good patient so they continue to sedate him. I'm sure that his helping tremendously with the healing process.

Glad to hear it's going so well and hope your DH is feeling better about things. I guess that even though you can't get to a hospital, getting immediate medical attention is key in these kinds of situations.

OP this happened to my FIL exactly one year ago TODAY! My inlaws were on a Southwest flight when he had a massive heart attack. They had to divert the plane and he ended up spending 29 days in the ICU in an unfamiliar city away from home. He also coded, needed CPR and DH even flew up there twice when they were told to call the family in. Needless to say it has been a long recovery but DH is doing very well today. Same as your situation, they said the best place he could have been was on the plane because he was not alone and they almost immediately landed the plane and got him to the hospital. He had thought he was having an asthma attack so had they not been traveling that day he almost certainly would have been at home alone and would not have survived. The worst for us too was the not knowing - we had no idea what city he was diverted to, if the heart attack was mild or massive, etc. Those few hours of not knowing we're truly the darkest I have ever experienced. So scary! But I am glad to hear your FIL is doing well and I hope his continued recovery is a smooth one.

Glad it had a happy ending for you Lemondog!

FIL was removed from vent and all lines, except for 1 IV yesterday. Was up walking, eating, drinking. Moved out of ICU and into a regular room. Spoke with my DD and DH and was in great spirits. They were planning on doing a cath on Friday.

Fast forward to this morning, BIL left me two messages on FB and one on my cell to call as soon as I received his message. Apparently FIL had an arythmia last night so they had to use the paddles to get his heartbeat in rhythm. So they did the cath ASAP in the middle of the night. Showed 3 blocked arteries so back into ICU and he is, right now, having the surgery. The didn't want to wait. Will be 6-8 hour surgery, so again, if you can spare a moment to send well wishes, positive vibes, prayers...it would be much appreciated.

Quadruple by-pass surgery. He's out of surgery and doing well. Will be kept sedated for the next 24 hours or so but the surgeon said things went well.
