DH called this morning to tell me he got a speeding ticket yesterday, while out of town on business. Now, for the last hour, I've been consumed with the "what will happen to our auto insurance premiums" thinking. I have no idea how much an increase will take place. We are middle aged with clean driving records and this is all foreign to me. :scared1:

It's the "not knowing" that drives me crazy. When will they find out, how much will they raise the premiums, etc. I went on the internet and found out that a speeding ticket in Tennessee is 3 points on your record, for four years. How much more will we have to pay for these 3 points for the next four years?

Am I thinking the worst here? Am I being unreasonable in my thinking? Should we travel out of state to fight the points? I'm aggravated with the possibility of four years of auto ins. premiums "punishment" we will have to endure. One stupid mistake and you have to pay for it for four years...it's so annoying.

Anyone been through this before? Can someone tell me it's not that bad, premiums won't go up that much, etc. What is going to happen?

Please, I need some positive thoughts inside my head right now. :grouphug:

In Massachusetts it is $100 (extra on the premiums)for each point with that said I wouldn't worry about it. There is nothing that can be done.

Did you post this on the Budget Board too? If so I already replied there. :)

In NC I think that you can pay a lawyer to "take care of it". This usually runs you about 500-600 bucks. But it then won't go on your insurance (I don't think :confused3).
I guess it also depends on how severly he was speeding.
Why don't you call a law office and ask them about this.

Yes, and thank you for your reply. I posted here to get some words of encouragement that it's not so bad, and try to think positive. I knew here on the Disney for Families board, that the wonderful parents could help and encourage me to not dwell on the negative and try to keep a positive outlook...it's so hard right now.

Thanks again.

Contact the District Attorney that is assigned to the ticket your dh received. Most times if a person's record is clean and they write a letter to the DA there is a good chance the ticket will be reduced to a lesser violation; one that will not add points to your license (such as failure to obey a traffic control device). You do not want to admit guilt in your letter but maybe write something about how you have never had a ticket before, were going with the flow of traffic, etc. My Dh got a ticket out of state and he did this on the advice of a friend who is an attorney and it worked. No points on the license, we paid the fine (almost $200.00) and our insurance didn't go up.

Wishing you luck and sending good vibes. I know how frustrating this can be.

I had never had a speeding ticket until last April, then I got 2 in 6 months  Our car insurance went up $7 a month.
