Need phone for number and voicemail only

I'm working on a charity event and we need a phone number with voicemail for receiving inquiries to which we can respond. We don't need a physical phone; just a voicemail box for people to leave messages. I checked with the local phone company and they offered $25/month plus installation, and it has to be installed in a home. I'd rather not install in a home for liability reasons so magicjack probably isn't a viable solution.

I'm guessing I can probably do better with a cellphone. Can anyone make any recommendations? Cheapest cell plans for very minimal minutes? Alternative solution I'm not considering? Something I can do online?

Have you looked at Google Voice? I think it can do this for you.

E Voice! Just google them. No contracts, no sign up. They give you a bunch of free minutes and an 800 number with stand alone voicemail, I like it because you can put your cell # in and they will text you the message so you don;t have to call in to check a mailbox. Sometimes the computer interpretation is funny too. I sell fence so I get lots of messages about bad Frenches. I think it's $9 a month, it was the cheapest I found.

Sounds like Google Voice might be a good choice (I don't know anything about it, but FREE is always worth looking into!). But I thought I would mention that magicjack will do what you want too. We use it for our home phone, but once you install and set it up, you could just unplug the thing and all your calls will go to voicemail. The voicemails are sent to whatever e-mail address you designate as audio recordings that you can listen to on any computer.

For anyone who has used Google Voice or Evoice, if you discontinue service, do you still own the phone number in the same manner as you would if we went with cell service? Thanks again!
