Need opinions about correct photo imaging software

I really want to make some customized shirts that have the photo images in the words. I want to use our photos from previous vacations and spell out our names and such with those as the filler of the letters (I hope this makes sense). I have seen several signatures with those type of graphics here on the board. What photo imaging software or site do you recommend for this type of design? Also, what in the world is that style called? I can't even find a name for it, so I haven't been able to find the right software.

If I understand what you've said ( I think I do ), I've done it with Photoshop Elements, and I think it's called type masking---at least that's what it says if I hover the cursor over the icon I click on to make it Hope this helps! With photoshop it seems pretty easy to do, and I spend waaaaaay to much time playing with this program, it's fun!
