Last Monday I was on my way to a parent teacher conference (our school requires that we do home visits instead of the parents coming to us) when somebody in the neighborhood threw somethin at my car, damaging my driver's side door. Aside from scaring the crap out of me because I thought I had hit something, it has caused a dent and put a decent scrape in my paint. It's not huge, but it is noticeable.

I filed a police report that night, but didn't have time to call insurance because of conferences. I kept meaning to do so, and forgot. Is it too late to call insurance now? Thankfully my teaching partner saw the guy throw it, we even have the address of the house and it is all there on the police report that was filed that night. I would like to get it fixed. It's not horrendous, but it is unsightly and I worry about the possibility of rusting over later. I'm not knowledgeable about cars, so perhaps that fear is unfounded.

Needless to say I was (and still am) pretty pissed off about the whole ordeal. Seriously, what grown man throws random objects at passing cars? I have to drive by that house every day on the way to school, and it makes me nervous now. I'm sort of fence sitting on what to do. I have a $500 deductible. The scrape/dent is about 2 inches or so, would it even be worth the hassle of calling insurance this late in the game?

you might also want to check with your employer. dh was using our car to drive to a training in the course of his former job when it was damaged, his employer's insurance coverd the repairs.

That's what I was thinking. If your car was damaged while you were using it for work, then your work insurance should cover it.

This is probably what will happen. Call your own insurance company first and see what they say. Often vandalism is covered without a deductible and it isn't a chargeable claim-meaning your rates can't go up because of it. Good for you for getting a police report too=that will help.
