Need information about Georgia....

Hi Everyone!! I have received some really great information from the people who post here and I am back looking for your help.

My husband has been offered a job in the Macon/Warner Robins, Georgia area. This is a huge decision for us. I did months of research for a Disney Cruise!! I don't know how I am going to handle researching this!!

We have 1 little girl who is 5 so a good public school is a must.

We live in Texas now so I think the climate is about the same or maybe even milder. I hate snakes and unfortunately we have almost every poisonous snake here in Texas... a move where there aren't so many would be very welcome!

Any tidbit of info would be great!!

I cant help much, but we were just there last weekend. And I thought it was pretty. Hilly and LOTS of big trees....alot greener than Texas!!!

I have several friends from the Macon area, and they all went to private schools. My DH's aunt lives there and her children went to private school as well.

Sorry, can't help you with schools. Climate is hot and humid, very humid. They have a lovely Cherry Blossom Festival every year. There is a very nice historical downtown area.

I have driven through Macon often (I live in metro-Atlanta, so it's on my way to WDW, LOL!), and it seems like a very nice town. It's about 1.5 hours away from Atlanta, so you will have reasonably close big city access when you need it. I don't know anything about the public schools, so I'm no help there. Sorry I don't know more! Georgia is much hillier and greener than the parts of Texas I've been to (Dallas and Austin), if that helps.

I live very close to Macon, Georgia and graduated from a private high school in Macon. My children go to the same private school. The public schools around here are AWFUL!!!!, I wouldn't send my cats there.

I don't know much about Georgia except that it's closer to WDW than Texas!

We live one hour north of Macon at this time. I agree with the schools needing some help and would probably go with private or home schooling if I lived there.

You will be on what we jokingly call the "nat/gator" line. We lived there for a time and it seemed that as soon as you entered Macon there were tons of little annoying nats- all the time - all year around. Also, from time to time a gator or two will stray that far north. When we lived in Americus Georgia ( south of Macon by an hour )- it was just as bad ( many more gators ) so I think that it's the weather and swampy area that promotes the critter problems. Also, we have our share of snakes- but you are used to this- watch out for the black widows- they are out in force this summer- I guess all the rain has helped them to reproduce.

All in all a pretty place to live- lots of water for sports and fishing. Southern Charm abounds there. Most of the locals are friendly. There is lots of racial tention in our area and southward so be careful to check out your neighborhood very well and make sure that you feel comfortable and fit in with the neighbors. I've learned by experience that no matter how non-racist a person is there always seems to be someone that has a bad attitude.

You will be about 2.5 to 3 hours from the North Georgia Mountains, about 5.5 hours give or take depending on your driving speeds from WDW and about 4 hours from the Georgia/South Carolina coast/barrier islands. We love living here as all we need is a few hours to get to any vacation destination - mountains, beach or our favorite WDW!

You will find it much different from Texas. We have very humid weather- think of Orlando but just turned down a notch. We do manage to have all four seasons complete with leaves falling and a sprinkle or two of snow flurries each winter- at which just the chance of receiving snow they close down the schools and the grocery stores run out of milk and bread- I'm from PA and it's really funny to watch people buy up all the bread thinking they will be snowed in- the problem is that Georgia doesn't have all the special equipment to handle snow/ice and since we are warm in nature we usually get ice storms more often then snow -when we do get snow this far south, it's usually just a inch or two but the roads can get dangerous at times. All in all, our winters, springs and falls are beautiful- just really hot/humid summers.
