I'm hoping to add a couple of nights at Disney's Vero Beach resort at the end of our WDW trip in late January. I've read great things about the resort itself, but comments about how isolated it is in terms of restaurants, shopping, etc. We certainly aren't looking for anything built-up, like Myrtle Beach, but would like the option of shopping or a variety of restuarants (doesn't have to be "on-site", but within a 20 minute drive?!?!)
Can anyone give me information about this kind of thing? Also, when they say the restuarant on-site is "expensive"--relative to what? WOuld I expect park prices or higher?
Thanks very much!

I understand your desire for off-property activities, but in my opinion, the beauty of Vero is on-site relaxation.

That being said, many here can give you great ideas of fun things to do. Often overlooked is a tour of Kennedy Space Center, although more than 20 minutes away.

Have fun at Vero Beach....

There are lots of restaurants within a 20 minute drive of the resort. For shopping, there is an outlet mall nearby, as well as a "regular" mall. Now, that being said, I have to admit that we seldom leave the resort. For us, Vero is about relaxing. I agree with Maistre Gracey that it is truly the beauty of Vero.

We enjoy having a leisurely breakfast on the balcony, wander down to the beach with a cooler full of water, snacks and lunch and spend the day. Then back to the room for showers and walk over to Shutters for dinner. Prices at the restaurants are lower than park prices, but some feel they are high. Here's a link from Deb's Unofficial WDW website to menus from the Vero restaurants -- it's old, but it should give you a better idea of offerings and prices.

Enjoy

We have gone to VB several times without ever leaving the resort. There is so much to do there. Beach, pool, mini golf, activities.

We love the on-site restaurants. We don't find them terribly expensive. The snack bar out by the pool has always served us fresh, hot food that we thought was reasonably priced. We also enjoy Shutters for dinner. They have a fresh sorbet every night and it is wonderful!

We also enjoy the brunch and seafood buffet at Sonya's.

I don't think any of the food choices at VB are more expensive than their counterparts at WDW. Even if they were, we would still eat there. I think the food is one of the best things about VB.

You could rent bikes, take a drive to a citrus grove, go to a treasure museum, go on a waverunner tour, etc.

There are some nice shops in town near the Holiday Inn. If you do go into town and end up by the Holiday Inn you could try Casey's Place for a nice casual lunch outside at a picnic table and then do some shopping.

HAVE FUN :D

Is that MaryAnn from Gilligan's Island?:D
YES indeed!!! :teeth:
I've always been a MaryAnn over Ginger fan, but I am still in distress about MaryAnn vs Jeanie!!! :teeth:

The Disney resort stretches the definition of Vero Beach. The "real" Vero Beach caters to an upscale winter crowd and has quite a bit of shopping and restaurants. If you head down A1A (which is a very pretty drive) you'll hit a "downtown" area which is the "true" Vero Beach" with small shops as well as the Holiday Inn and the Ocean Grill -- both dining options. You also pass a small "shops" area on the way. For major shopping, you'll want to head out to State Road 60 where you'll find the big mall and large outlet area already mentioned along with several other shopping areas. There's a movie theater out here also. There is a live theater in Vero if that holds any interest.

More than 20 minutes away, but certainly doable, is the Palm Beach Gardens Mall and also shopping/window shopping along Worth Avenue in Palm Beach.

There is all kinds of restraunts with in 15 minutes of the VB resort. We just got back Saturday. You have the fast food type(McDonalds,Wendys,KFC,Arbys, etc) and you also have the chain type restraunts on US1 and Route 60(Outback,Chilis,Applebys,TGIF,etc) there is also a food court at the Indian River Mall which is only 15 minutes away. Also in front of the mall is a Bob Evans restraunt.

Shutter's prices aren't bad, but Sonyas are a little expensive.

Here is a list of most of the restraunts in VB with addresses's below.
