My son is underweight and drinks three Boost Plus a day. I'm trying to avoid bringing a case of drinks on my upcoming cruise so I've been looking into alternatives.I know about smoothies. I saw in Cove Cafe they have Core Power drinks,. Has anyone seen them recently and can confirm? Can you get Frappe drinks to go from there as he is too young to go in? Any other calorie dense drinks you folks can come up with?
The irony of trying to gain weight on a cruise is not lost on me. This kid has been working really hard and it's not as easy as you would think to take in 4000 calories a day. I have already spoken to him about not getting so wrapped up in activities he forgets to eat and reminded him that any food he wants is at his beck and call 24/7.

I've been there. I've had to recover from a huge weight loss in the past (I was 86 pounds and had to gain 25 pounds in crash course)... And yes indeed, it's not that easy to get 4000 calories a day and it can be quite heavy on the stomach which is why Boost & Ensure were life savers for me too!

Boost and Insure are usually made from dairy so I think that's a good lead to think about the dairies he can get on the ship: the ice cream is free so that's a good start... ;)

On the Dream and Fantasy, there's a juice bar where --I think-- you can get smoothies.

If you bring your own mixer, you could also possibly do your own mix of juices and yogurt in the morning at Cabanas.

You should definitely communicate with DCL as your son needs a specific diet and they will help you with that.

I also have to mention the Brie-Bacon-Tomato panini that is AMAZING, doesn't feel too "heavy on the stomach" and is indeed full of calories. ;)

I do not know whether Cove Cafe has Core Power drinks, but I do know that you will have no problem getting a frappe or other drink to go and bringing it to your son. Just tell the castmember it's to go. You don't even need to specify who it's for, although saying "I need a high-calorie drink to help my son gain weight" might get you suggestions such as extra protein powder (if they have it).

My suggestion is to bring some powdered mixes (like carnation instant breakfast), and add to milk.

The Magic also has a juice/smoothie bar ($), next to the soft serve ice cream area on deck 9.

I wish I could, but the powdered drinks aren't as calorie dense. And soft serve ice cream isn't either, if you can believe it. All that air.

Warm cookies and milk and/or Mickey Bars from room service? They have regular ice cream in Cabanas on Fantasy - I would think Magic has it too.

What about pizza, fries, chicken fingers? Those are all pretty caloric and easy to get up by the pool.

He can only eat so much solid food at a time. High calorie drinks between meals are an easy way to get the extra calories he needs.

I know the smoothies you can get for the kids at the shows are made from soft serve ice cream mix. They just pour it straight from the carton and add fruit puree. Maybe you can get this mix elsewhere? Also, what about bringing protein power to add to drinks he gets onboard?

Maybe check with the pediatrician to see if there are any travel alternatives to liquid Boost Plus.

What about checking into mailing yourself a package of what he needs. I know it is not ideal since it will be heavy - but it is an alternative. And you can always do priority flat rate - that might lower the shipping cost.

On our last cruise Cabana's had regular hand scooped ice cream. Maybe that would help??? A scoop or two after lunch?

Don't know what ship you're on, but the Vista Cafe on the Dream class ships serves the same drinks as Cove Cafe.

Yes to the instant breakfast. My son was also "weight challenged" and the doctor said to use those.

Even if it's not as calorie dense, it's still more than just drinking milk... couldn't hurt to use it.

Anyway, Boost Plus also makes a powdered mix that would less weight and easier to pack: https://www.boost.com/products/high-protein-powder

Amazon pantry might be a cheap way to do that.

I don’t believe DCL allows shipping food/beverages to the ship. OP would run the risk of not receiving it.

Depending on the severity of his situation, I would think “something is better than nothing” for the breakfast powders or such. Especially if there’s possibility he’d have more snacks than usual on vacation. Maybe check with his physician. But if it were my child and that important, i’d pack the Boost in a rolling carry-on and bring it with me.

Enjoy your cruise!

Thanks, but that's a different type. Boost Plus has 360 kcal in 8 oz. It's more than twice the calories of the High Protein and one and half times that of Carnation Instant Breakfast. I wish there was a powder. Would save me so much money. And we'll be on Magic.
I think I'm going to bring one box to have in the room for times he doesn't feel like running around to find something and just to have a little consistency in his diet.

This is true. Plus I am sailing out of NYC so shipping was never an option. And I am going to bring some, just not an entire weeks worth. I'm just looking for a way to carry one less thing.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
