i'll suggest that you either totaly prohibit them from going to the neighbors for help or if you do let them-get your neighbor's permission (we had a neighbor that did these somewhat frequently and it did get tiresome having your doorbell rung repeatedly by different groups of kids asking for the same stuff over and over and over, and they would get somewhat rude insisting that "everyone has one of these" and "why are you being mean and not letting me borrow yours").
-DO NOT list a particular color flower (or someone's blooming plant in their yard will get stripped bare)
-if one or more of the participants are your own kids, you might want to tell them they can't access your house (gives them a major advantage since they already know which of the items can be found there and where)
-maybe get each team a laundry basket from the dollar store-then they can put each item in it to carry back
-instead of being specific with each item maybe go generalized. like instead of listing a banana, list "a tropical fruit"-it might be fun to see what the kids come up with, and what they perceive as a tropical fruit. maybe list something like "a foreign food item or packaging" (this could get REALY funny like when one of dd's classmates brought mac and cheese in for their class's "foreign food potluck"-the little girl insisted it was foreign because "everytime we visit my aunt in canada she makes me mac and cheese")
