How do you write a sympathy card for parents who have lost their 20 year-old son suddenly? He apparantly died of sleep apnea. He played soccer with one of my sons 10-12 years ago. The boy's mother is the cousin of a long-time friend (we knew her before her son was born). They are people we don't see often, but if we "bump" into them at a store, we'd say "Hi". DH & I would like to send a card (we found out about this after the funeral). What to write? We don't know what they're going through (Thank God!) Should we just sign it: Our thoughts and prayers are with you? Anyone have suggestions?

Hi Min,

I think simply worded is fine. Sympathy cards are the hardest things to write, but they are always welcome.

I agree that simple wording is fine. I would write something like, "We're so sorry for your loss. We're praying for you."

Normally I would write "Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family"

That is a tough one but after my brother died, my parents and I were most touched by cards that included a small personal anecdote about my brother. (example..."I'll always remember Jimmy riding all over town on his bike....") Perhaps you could mention something about soccer. Just a suggestion. If that is not appropriate, your handwritten condolences are wonderful.

I have to agree with Allie. When my mom died, the cards that were the most comfort did mention something specifically about my mom. I would also say "You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers." So sad.
