My 14 month old DD is having a terrible time with the two new teeth she is getting. When her front teeth came in (4 top 4 bottom) she had no problems. The two that are coming in now are on the bottom and towards the back. The cold teething rings don't seem to be going back far enough to help.
Any mommies have any home remedies or tips? She has been crabby and miserable for the last few days. They have both broken through the skin already, and boy do they look HUGE!

Thanks,
Amy

Oh those molars are FUN aren't they?! :( Both my older two were a bit cranky when they came in. I think I gave them a dose of tylenol a couple times to help. Other than that there wasn't anything that really helped. They were too old for teethers and such. I hope she feels better soon. :)

Try the pop-ice popcicles that are wrapped in plastic. Give it to her w/o cutting open the tube and she can chew on it like a teether.

I'll tell you what my granny said when she was asked about this by one of my cousins. She said to rub some whiskey on the gums because it numbs it. Now I don't want people flaming me, I'm just telling you what my 80 year old granny said and she raised four healthy boys and 5 of her grandchildren.

occasionally so we give them a wash cloth soaked in warm water. Also, the wash cloth works well frozen. Wet it, wring it, freeze it. You can then mold it so they can stick it in and chew on it and it will reach way in the back.

Good Luck, we are on the 2 year molars now and we are NOT happy about it!

And for the person who suggested whiskey....our doctor told us she prefers that over the 'teething medications' available because those are -caine derivatives (co-caine, benzo-caine, no difference in her book!)

With my nephews I have rubbed liquied Tylenol on their gums, and this has helped. I have also rubbed pure Vanilla on them too.
This was in a home remedy book that I read.

Hi! Someone told me just yesterday ... to try some clove oil. She suggested I buy it at health food store and mix with vegetable oil. She said clove is old fashion remedy and tastes much better than orajel. NOW, please note I haven't tried this yet, so I am not sure it it works! Good luck!

I agree with Tylenol. My youngest is getting them too (has been for almost a month now, why don't they just come in already!!) Anyway, she will stick anything that is long enough to get to the back to chew on. Right now it is these long wooden pegs that belong to one of my DS's block sets. They're like an half-inch around, smooth wood, a little skinnier than a Lincoln Log. She walks around with one in her mouth almost all the time. She also shoves her fingers back there and chews too.
My mom swears by the whiskey also, although she used brandy with us. :D

Without talking to a knowledgeable person first! Not all of it is food grade and it must be diluted just right to be safe!!!

That is what we use but it's a specific concoction and was made by an herbalist so I know it's safe.

A friend recommended frozen waffle and they were a lifesaver with DD2 - she has reflux and so has a double whammy of the teething makes her saliva run, and too much of that in her tummy flares her reflux so she has trouble eating and keeping food down. The waffles helped the gums feel better and also gave her something in her tummy.

Vanilla is 35% alcohol, that is 70 proof! No wonder it worked. You would have been better off using whiskey.

Thanks for mentioning those ahutton! And bagels to boot! Weird, but works wonders for some kids. Worked with #1 here but #2 thought we were nuts!

We used Motrin for teething and it worked much better than Tylenol. Also used teething tablets that we found at Wal-Mart and they were real lifesavers! Several mom's at the MDO program I work at keep them in their diaper bags, too.

My sisters peditrician told her to rub some of the Motrin or Tylenol on the gum before giving the dose and it seemed to work quite well.

Good Luck!

Thanks for this post! That is one reason I didn't rush out and buy some , I wasn't too sure about this! I will contact an herbalist if we run out of other options! :)

That's exactly what happened to us! Our child was absolutely miserable and after 4 days of absolutely no sleep for any of us we got desperate! It works better than anything else we've used and usually will at least dull her down enough to get some sleep. Our second child has been a horrible teether. The first child just woke up with new teeth and never made a peep!

Here's a strange one for you. My ds was a huge teether! My dining room chairs still have teeth marks on them 16 years later.

What worked for him was a thick leather strap. I had a piece about 8 inches long and an inch wide. It had not been oiled or anything. DS could bite as hard as he wanted yet it was somewhat soft. That thing saved our sanity and our furniture. ;)

After reading the whiskey comment, it reminded me of what my pediatrician jokingly told me, year ago.

1)Pour a glass of whickey.

2)Rub some on the baby's gums.

3) (you) Drink the rest. ;)
