I am looking for a recipe for Hawaiian salad that my great aunt used to make. She used mandarin oranges, pineapple, whipped cream and marshmallows. My son is having a luau themed birthday party and I'd like to make this salad for the party. Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.

TIA, Ann :earsgirl:

We used to make one similar to that. It was called 5 cup salad. It had a cup each of drained mandarin oranges, drained pineapple, marshmallows, coconut and sour cream. They don't have to be exact cups, especially with the canned fruit. Hope this helps out.

My Mom makes that for our holidays--this year she forgot and the kids about went crazy they love it so much. This is the same exact recipe. She also puts a few maraschino cherries in and a little cherry juice to give it more color. You would not believe that it's made with sour cream--it's so good! Sometimes my mom uses the mini colored marshmallows instead of the white. Hope that helps.

I have a good Hawaiian fruit salad recipe somewhere, but it's different. Let me know if you want me to pull it out. My son loves all things tropical, and it's one of his favorites. When I take it to potlucks, people come looking for me to ask for the recipe. ;)

Thanks, Merry Poppins, I'd love to have your recipe. I'm going to start experimenting today with the recipes you have given me- thanks everyone!

I'm on my way out the door right now, but I'll look for it tonight.

Sorry I never got back to you. My mom has been in the hospital and life is hectic right now. Here it is. It's really easy and if you are cooking for a crowd, it's easy to double or triple. The secret is the vanilla pudding mix and the orange drink mix. Yum!

Tropical Fruit Salad
2 apples, cut in chunks with peel
2 bananas
2 c. halved seedless grapes
1 lg. can mandarine oranges, drained
1 box instant vanilla pudding
1 can pineapple chunks, drained reserving juice
1/2 pkg Crystal Lite orange drink mix (or you can use Tang)

Mix pudding mix and drink mix. Add pineapple juice. Stir in fruit (except bananas) and coat apples well so they won't turn brown. Just before serving add sliced bananas.

Thank you, I appreciate you taking time to post the recipe for me. I'm going to make it for the party and I'll let you know how it comes out.

Costco has a box of frozen appetizer type snacks that are "luau" themed. I think it was 4 different foods and 2 dipping sauces. That could be fun too if you have access to Costco!
