Need help with MGM/Fantasmic dining?

My family of 9 is undecided about what to do with the Fantasmic dinner/show package. We currently have an ADR for the dinner/show at H&V but I've read the reviews and I'm not sure the food will be that great. We can't do Mama Melrose cos it's booked and Brown Derby is too expensive. Our day at MGM will be on 1/23 so it may not be that crowded and we may stand a chance of getting into the show without having the dinner plan. We would like to do the Sci Fi and take our chances on getting in the show. I value your experience. What would you do and why?
