Need help with homeschooling

Good advice. I would check into some things that "seem" right, and that he is interested in, and then take that info back to the school to get specifics of hours needed, etc. It would be great if you could really delve into something that is important to him. So many kids have to drop hobbies, interests, during that time of their life. (If they aren't resume builders!)

That's why I suggested once she figures out some options she check with the school to see if credit will transfer. That is the part they can help her with. I just didn't get the extreme anger Uncle Remus had that the school counselor didn't tell the OP what to do. The whole point of "home"schooling is that you make those decisions, not the school.
But she isn't truly home schooling. He son will be getting high school credit for taking classes outside of the school. Considering the fact they did have some info for her (pamphlets from BJU) and suggested this route, it seems her son isn't the first student that has taken this route. The counselor should know what programs they accept.

The Counselor had the pamphlets because DOD Schools do not offer sumer school so if there is a lack of credits the only way they can be made up is to do a distance learning course. My experience is that they are pretty flexible in what classes they will accept for credit.

www.abekaacademy.org - We used this. The teachers are on DVD and do a very good job.

I also second the recommendation from the poster who said to check on your home state for online options.

I'm in Mississippi, and we have the Mississippi Virtual School that's online through the Mississippi Dept. of Education. In fact, since you're in the military, you might be able to talk to someone who would give you permission to enroll even though you aren't from MS. There's no charge, and the actual classes start on Sept. 4th. - http://www.mvs.mde.k12.ms.us/

Good luck!

Texas Tech has a highly regarded on line high school. Also most of the girls I teach gymnastics to get their P.E. grade from me. I fill out the paper work at the beginning of the year and then every six weeks I send in the grade. This way they get out of school early to train.

We have used The MorningStar Academy, and we're pretty happy with it. It IS and accredited school, and they DO provide trascripts at the end of the year, so you will be able to get the credit at any highschool.

We've also been checking into this one North Star Academy. It looks pretty good as well.

With NorthStar Academy, you can

• Attend a Christian on-line school custom-tailored for home schoolers and families living overseas.

• Attend jr. and sr. high in your pajamas via the internet…make the school come to you!

• Earn jr. or sr. high school credits right at home, even if "home" happens to be in Ulannbatar, Mongolia! (Katrina T. did !!!)

• Have up to 11 months to complete the 9-month school "year" within flexible due dates

• Have a teacher provide all the lessons, assignments, tests, tutoring, etc.

• Have the school provide and deliver all of the course materials to your door...or hut.

• Enroll in courses as a part or full-time student for one or both semesters!
