Just planning our summer 2014 adventure. We have booked flights to do Pacific Highway road trip flying into San Francisco and out of LA taking in Disneyland (would be rude not to) am now looking at hotels but am struggling a bit. There's hundreds of them and trip advisor on area is bit random (even top hotels have mixed reviews) any advice would be appreciated please:)

We've stayed at lots if different hotels and motels in that general area and we've never had a bad one. The last non Disney place we stayed at was the Carousel Inn but that was quite a few years ago. Since then we always stay at either the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Pier which have always been excellent. Sorry I'm not much help. Hopefully somebody will be along shortly who has more recent experience of staying in a non Disney hotel! :goodvibes

We stayed at the HoJo last year. The rooms could perhaps have done with a refurb, but they were by no means terrible. We had free wifi and free parking and could walk to Disneyland, the pool areas were good too. I would definitely stay again. For us it was a choice between there and Candy Cane Inn. Lots of the Anaheim area hotels have parking charges so look out for that as it adds onto the cost of stay. They all have the ART (Anaheim Resort Transportation) which you can get a pass for if the hotel isn't in walking distance. I've also stayed at the Red Lion which was also nice and in walking distance, WestCoast Anaheim which has Disney views but has been renamed about 4 times and u don't know what it's called now! And the Hyatt Orange County, this was a lovely hotel but over a mile away from the Disneyland entrance so you'd definitely need to use the ART or car to get to the parks.

Another vote for the HoJo here. Decent pool area, a decent laundry facility and just across the road from a really good breakfast. A bit noisy from the interstate just behind, but the windows are all heavily insulated and you don't notice it when you are in the room, just when you step out onto the balcony.

We also used the HoJo (twice) but its a few years ago now, paid about £35/nt easy walk to Disney and Mimis Café right next door. Our trips were 7 & 9 nights so too expensive to stay onsite, if its just a night or 2 look at onsite costs.

Stayed at the HoJo April 2011- couldn't really fault it for the price and proximity to DL.

Thanks everyone. Will look your suggestions up. After staying at Yacht Club this summer am totally sold on the on site experience It's just very pricey (Over £1000 for a week) am thinking maybe a 2 or 3 night stay there then maybe moving on elsewhere. :)

We stayed here Easter 2010, courtesy of virgin Holidays, when the Icelandic volcano kindly gave us a bonus 8 day extension to our California fly-drive :yay:

They ran a free shuttle bus every 15/20 mins to/from the parks back then :)

We stayed at Embassy Suites last summer, it was extremely clean, quiet and free breakfast. It's a good 10minute walk to the parks but there is a shuttle service that runs every 15 mins.

The Hojo is a great location and has a Mimi's Cafe on site, the walk is quite pleasant and the monorail runs across the road!

I stayed at the disneyland hotel this summer it was fantastic, but expensive (it was my 30th so a special trip!)

You could also looks into renting dvc points for the grand Californian :thumbsup2

I toured a similar route in 2006, so quite some time ago but would suggest looking at the Peach Tree Inn in San Lois Obispo and the Candy Cane Inn which is walking distance from the entrance of Disney Land. Both of which really stand out in my memory despite 7 years having past and staying at numerous hotels on that trip and since.
Oh I do hope to visit again soon, such beautiful places to visit. I'd love to hear about the plans you make :)

We have stayed at few places just opposite the entrance, last stay was at park vue inn. You really only need a few days here in my opinion.

I thought I'd quickly pop back to recommend a restaurant in Santa Barbara in case you stop by there. Its called the Santa Barbara Shellfish Company. Its on the pier and I had the best food I've EVER eaten there :)

We do plan on visiting Santa Barbara so will try to pop by there :thumbsup2

Stayed at the Best Western Stovalls Inn on Katella a couple of times. Bit quieter there and you can take a short cut into Downtown Disney through the Grand Californian. Got Coco's next door (think Perkins) and Dennys just round the corner.

We're recently back from a week at the Candy Cane Inn and really enjoyed it there. It's the closest hotel (discounting Grand Californian to DCA), has it's own private shuttle bus that runs every half hour although we used to walk (8 minutes), and complimentary breakfast delivered to the room. Wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Happy planning ..... we LOVED DL and DCA ..... hoping to go back 2015. :cloud9:

We stayed at the HoJo in August. We had one of the rooms that gave a great view of the fireworks. The room itself was a good size with a decent coffeemaker, fridge and microwave. As with most hotels along Harbor Drive, it was only a 10 minute walk to both park entrances, and also the same distance to a number of restaurants including Tony Romas, and a Cheesecake Factory a few minutes further on.
