So where to you go when you need help. The DIS of course.

Trying to plan my daughter's sweet sixteen party this coming March. We are new to NJ, so I'm not familiar with locations.

Anyone have any suggestions in Ocean or Monmouth counties??

Thanks in advance.

I wnet to a wedding here about 9 years ago. they have a party room that's fairly nice.

the wedding was in April. the ceremony was down on the beach, and it was cold, but the party was indoors and was lovely.

It really depends on what you're looking for. Are you looking for a formal affair, or something fun for a bunch of 16 year olds? You pretty much can do anything, and spend anything!!! If you were a little more specific on what type of affair you're looking for, I probably could recommend some places. Also, how many people are you thinking of inviting?

Hey Lori,

Well my daughter wants to wear a big poofy dress, so something a little formal but fun at the same time.

About 75 people, I guess. I hate being new to the area, because I just don't know any places. I'm afraid to pick one and then have it turn out awful.

Briar Rose - thanks, I'll definitely look into that.

Probably the most formal in the area will be the Sheraton in Eatontown. It's on Route 35 at Industrial Way. Pretty close to the Monmouth Mall. It will be VERY expensive and might be booked for next March already, especially if you're looking for a Saturday night. Actually if you're looking for a Saturday night, most of the "nicer" places will already be booked, since they are also used as Wedding venues. There is a place in Spring Lake, kind of far from Jackson, it's called Old Mill Inn. It's really pretty, and it might be worth a look. I think the Shadowbrook is VERY overpriced for horrible food, but it is pretty. My sister just had her wedding at the Garden Manor in Aberdeen. It was o.k., but again the food was horrible. The Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank is awesome, and the food is GREAT. The Oyster Point, which is down the road, is also nice, but I think it's a little more expensive then the Molly, since it's on the water. There is a place on the beach in Sea Bright, but I can't think of the name right now, and it's good. Merry Makers is a cateering company that owns a few halls in Monmouth County. They have a place in the Colts Neck/Matawan area that is pretty good, and usually resonable. Also, the Colts Neck Inn might do a party, but I've personally never been there. There might be some places in Freehold, but unforunately I'm not as familiar with that area as I am with the shore. Here is a piece of advice, whatever place you decide on, give Magical Enterprises in Toms River a call. They are an entertainment company that can help you do some interesting activities at the party, they do EVERYTHING!! If you come up with a few places you're interested in, e-mail me and I'll tell if I know anything. If I don't, I'll ask around. I've been in this area since 1973 ( I was 3), so I'm pretty familiar with the territory!!!

Wow Lori,

Thanks. The DIS comes through again

Do you know anything about Spring Lake Manor?

That's the Waters Edge and I love it!! My son's Christening was there and it was fabulous. Great views, and very pretty. Also Merry makers are great caterers.

The Oyster point is great. We had my inlaws anniversary party there and it was wonderful. They had a nice room that could accomodate about 60-70.

Also you may want to look into some places in downtown Freehold. I know one place there does weddings and such and it looks pretty. Or maybe Vans.

The Spring Lake Manor is not quite as nice and the food is not so great.

There is also the Crystal Pointe in Brick/Brielle. Thats great too.
And how about Ashleys in Brick? Also check that castle place in Lakewood.

I'm sure I'll think of more!

Laura

We got married at the Old Mill Inn in Spring Lake. Nice atmosphere, rooms overlook a lake and the food is good!
I agree with MOMTOMOO that Crystal Point in is also nice. The Castle on Rt. 9 in Lakewood is now called the Chateau Grande. It is on the elegant side inside and the food was very good when I attended a wedding there. Not sure if Ashley's in Brick is still Ashley's- may have changed names.
Sadly, there arent too many top notch places in Ocean County that I can recommend to you (which is why I got married in Monmouth County!)

I have heard of Spring Lake Manor, but don't know anyone who's been there. It looks like MOMTOMOOTOO has, so I defer to her comments. Thanks for the name MOMTOMOOTOO, it was eluding me, but that's the place!!!!

charlie,nj - I ALSO got married at the Manor!!!! DH and I had our ceremony out back under the gazebo, and since pictures followed, we missed our cocktail hour!! DH and I haven't been back since, ( we also got engaged there!!) and swear if we don't get invited to a wedding there, our DD's wedding will be there so we can experience cocktail hour!!!

Well, first of all welcome to NJ and specifically to Jackson! I grew up there and then spent 10 years teaching there. It will always hold a great part of my heart. We did my daughter's Sweet 16 last year and it was a wonderful and fun experience. I wish you the same. There really aren't too many places nearby Jackson for a party like this. Monmouth County has a larger selection for sure. The Freehold Gardens Hotel on Rt 33 has a banquet room and although it is in Monmouth County, it's not far from Jackson. In Toms River, there is the Old Time Tavern, known for YEARS as a reasonable place with decent food. Fancier Sweet 16's are relatively new to this part of NJ, so be prepared for many people to be shocked at the party. The banquet mgr's will probably tell you this but I must say it. Don't worry about the food for the kids. THey eat SO LITTLE. It was a sin. But, the dessert bars are a huge hit. Our "Make Your Own Sundae" went over very well. I have a terrific and reasonable DJ if you need one. Feel free to PM or Email me if I can help you at all. Best of luck and enjoy!

Thanks everyone for all your input!! It is really appreciated.

So far, I have calls in to the Water's Edge and Crystal Point.

I went to Chateu Grand yesterday (the castle in Lakewood). It is really elegant inside and while it is quite a menu, I'm sure most teenagers won't eat the stuff.

My daughter checked out the website for Spring Lake Manor, and thought it looked nice. And they have a sweet sixteen menu with mostly kid type foods. We'll probably only have about 10 adults there with about 60 kids, so I guess I should really gear it towards the kids liking.

We're going to check that out today. I really liked the Chateau Grande, but maybe for our 20th anniversary.

Patricia, we love Jackson. I couldn't dream of living anywhere else now. It has been such a great move for us. But it is hard being new and not knowing anything. Back in Long Island, I would have had this all booked by now. LOL.

Thanks again guys,

Liz

I am not familiar with locations but get her a corsage with flowers and sixteen sugar cubes. I got one for my 16th (years ago :p ) and it was the best. I had not seen one before or since but it was a big hit...Have fun!

my sisters and I all had sugar cubes in our corsages! don't know if there were 16 of them, but it was cute.

Hi Mickeysmommy and mtemm,

I had sugar cubes in my 16th corsage too!! Do they still use them??

I know they have special candles and a candle lighting ceremony now. Have to look into that too.

WOW! Is this an east coast thing? I have never heard of anyone actually having a sweet 16 except in the movies. How wild...

Definitely not an "east coast" thing, as I'm from the east coast and I've never heard of anything like this. I was just about to ask if this was a Sweet Sixteen or a wedding?

The most I've ever heard of was having a sleepover...

Also, you say you are new to the area -- how do you know 75 people to invite? How does she know 60 kids already? My DD doesn't know 60 kids to invite to a party and we've lived in our area for 7 years!

A big sweet sixteen wasn't the norm for the area I grew up in (southern california), either. I did have a sleep-over with my friends, and what was supposed to be a nice homemade dinner beforehand. My mom tricked me and threw it at McDonalds. I'm not kidding. She did the whole little kid party. It was hysterical. I did get a corsage with roses and sugar cubes. My sister's each had something similar.

Really,
I've been to many while I was living in New York. And my daughter was to 3 this past spring alone. It is quite a big deal as she's been thinking about hers and planning her friends for quite some time.

We've actually been in the area about a year and my daughter is extremely outgoing and is in student council, school sports as well as travel soccer so there is a large group of friends.

Not to mention her NY friends that are already planning on travelling out for the weekend.

In fact, I remember my sweet sixteen to be a big deal as well. Not as large but definitely had about 50 people.
