NEED HELP with a Dilemma. What do you think?

Here is the scenario:

Setting: High School Band Class.

student A is asked by teacher to "get something down off the wall" for her. He sets his Clarinet on her piano (where there is a flute case (belonging to student B) alredy set on the piano.

Student B (who doesn't know that student A set his Clarinet (not in it's case) on the Piano), reaches for her Flute case...... The flute case bumps the clarinet....... the clarinet falls to the floor........ the mouth-piece breaks.

The mouth-piece costs $40.

Here is the question:

***** Should Student B pay........
1. Nothing
2. Half of the cost of the mouth-piece.
3. All of the cost of the mouth-piece.

I was taught that my things were my responsibility.

If I were student A, I wouldn't expect student B to pay anything for my carelessness.

If I were student B, I'd feel badly and would apologize for the accident. Although I wouldn't feel obligated, I might possibly offer to pay for half, depending. However, if it seemed "necessary" to "keep the peace," I might very well just go ahead and pay the $40.

Honestly, I don't believe Student B owes Student A anything. Student A should have been more careful. This should be a learning experience for Student A.

I think that life happens and Student B should not be expected to pay anything, except maybe give an apology at the time of the accident.

After spending years in band, around band, and teaching band...one of the first things you are taught is responsibility and care for your instrument. If it's not in your hands or in its case, whatever happens is the owner's responsibility.

I thought about it for a few minutes (ok, seconds) without reading the other responses. My first thought was that student A should be responsible for his instrument and that student B owes nothing more than an apology.

PS, are you the teacher, or the parent?
