Yes, I'm stupid, feel free to call me that, but help me too.

Ds started school in a new place this past week and there is a math problem that he hasn't a clue about and Ive never seen this before. So it looks like 2 columns and it says Function Table, one column has In and one has Out. Then she has a question beside it that says, What is the rule? and then find the missing numbers. So how do I help him figure out what the missing numbers are? I feel so completely out of the loop. Ive emailed his teacher but havent heard back from her.

Don't feel bad. The way they teach math these days is very ifferent from when we were in school. Glad you figured it out!

You need to figure out what the pattern (rule) is.

For example: IN - 2, 3, 4, 5 OUT - 4, 6, x, x

The rule is multiply by 2 and the remaining OUT answers would be 8 and 10.

I hoped this cleared things up.

Nevermind I just figured it out. Geez.

:thumbsup2 Yay Mom!! I hate 4th grade math...and 3rd grade, and 5th grade..I used to love math in school, I have a degree in accounting..but elementary school math makes my head spin!

Welcome to EVERYDAY MATH!!!!!

I really dislike this math curriculum. It can be sooooo confusing sometimes.

What gets me is that EVERYTHING is a word problem. I completely SUCKED at word problems when I was a kid, and things haven't improved much with age. I can easily do the math process itself, but pulling the information from the word problem takes more thinking than I'm willing to invest. :rotfl:

With Everyday Math, we introduce function tables in the FIRST GRADE!

And it's sooooooo much fun! :headache:

I can't tell you how many times I told my DGD she had to wait until her dad got home (from 2nd thru 4th grade) because of the "odd" way they teach math now.. I didn't have a clue what they were looking for..:headache:

I'm 59 now.. When I was learning math it was your traditional adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and basic word problems: "If Johnny has $1.25 and each pack of gum costs .25, how many packs can Johnny buy?"

Do you have any idea how embarrassing it is to tell your second, third, or fourth grade DGD you can't help them with elementary math????

I HATE Everyday Math!

Trust me I can't do 3rd. grade math, and my DH also doesn't know all of the problems and how to figure them out. Why can't they give us a book.

I really want to know - what is wrong with the way we learned Math, it worked for us.

My DS also had a hard time when we moved. NJ didn't use Everyday Math, when he got to SC he was lost.

When you get the answer to that, will you let me know?

It seems that they intentionally make it more difficult than it needs to be and I don't understand why..:confused3

Does your child have a Student Reference Book that they can bring home when they do homework? It's the hardcover book in the Everyday Math program. There are sample problems and explanations so that they can see how to do the skills that are done in class. The journal pages have SRB page numbers in the corners so that the kids can easily find the page when they have a problem. Our first lesson is teaching the kids how to use the SRB.

No they don't have this book, unless they have it in class. They don't bring home any books, everything is a photo copy sheet of Math to do.

ask about the book then, as it is a big part of the program.
