We have Dec UY. I thought that would be fine b/c I planned on spring and early Dec. trips each year but now dh wants to take a trip just b/f thanksgiving (he's in retail - so dec is big business time).

My worry lies in if we have to cancel the trip. For the people who travel close to you UY date, do you worry much about possible cancellations? The potential for us canceling is really quite slim but watching 100-150 pt go down the drain isn't a nice thought. I realize that if I have enough time, I could rent out the reservation but I'm thinking more immediate - like just a few days notice because someone gets very sick, etc. Do ou ever buy insurance policies in this case to recoup "money lost"?

DVC does offer travel insurance for some reimbursement for such a cancellation. It does not return the points to you account, but pays about $5 per point used. There are also some restrictions, so be sure to check on that before purchasing. Otherwise, any cancellation prior to arrival day will return the points to your account. If this happens within the last 4 months of your Use Year, you would not be able to bank the points any longer and they would expire at the end of the Use Year.

Due to my Dad's heart surgery, we had to cancel a Thanksgiving trip to HHI with a February UY. Due to DH work schedule, we rescheduled for MLK Jr. weekend in mid-January. We ended up going in very cold weather even though I had a bad cold.

We are going to try avoid the end of our UY in the future.

I now realize that having an April use year is terrible for us. While we have vacationed in April, we find ourselves far more often traveling in Feb. I grit my teeth, pray for health, and am really looking forward to Vero Beach in 2 weeks. (If we had to cancel I would co-opt adult kids to use the holding points).

Thanks! I'll check into that. The other insurance policies I found online only reimburse things like travel fees, maintenance fees. If we had paid cash for the rooms, then it would be reimbursed, but not for points we might lose. So, I'll check into the DVC one.
