Need help/suggestions for a gift for our DS (7.5yrs). Friday (9/8) he will be testing for his TKD black belt. This has been 3.5 years in the making and we're sure he'll pass. We want to get him something really nice (to express how much he has achieved & how hard he's worked), but we don't know what?? :confused3 We were going to get him a new pc, but I think :santa: will be takin' care of that....so, any ideas??? :confused3 TIA :wave2:

Build-a-Bear has karate outfits(with black belts). how about a bear wearing one of those?

Don't they have display cases for the belts? That might be nice.

Thanks for the build a bear idea...that's a possibility :scratchin .....we bought him a "rack" that was custom made to hold all his belts (14 in all), from someone who was going around to "schools" selling them (actually he was a carpenter and I think was out "selling" to make extra Christmas cash :teeth: )...and we gave that to him last Christmas (cost $100!!!)....so, I'll keep thinking....he tests Friday, but in lieu of teaching "patience", they have to wait till the belt ceremony on Thursday to receive their new belts :goodvibes ....so, thanks for the ideas...keep 'em comin'!! :wave2:

How about taking a really good picture of him posing with a "borrowed" black belt on and taking it and having it blown up to bigger than life size poster for his wall? My son would have liked that sort of thing. :goodvibes

Congrats to your son!!! My daughters next test is also her black belt one though I think it may take another 6 months until she is ready for it so I have some time to decide. I know we will be going out to dinner at the restaurant of her choice the day of the test but not sure what else I am going to get for her yet! She did decide on the phrase that gets written on the other side of her belt though, they write it in Korean or japanese, cant remember which! She chose "great things come in small packages" since she is small.
Good luck to him today!!!! How proud he must be of himself!

My kids are all black belts. They are certified through the Korean TKD whatever it is called and have their certificates from Korea. I had them matted and framed when they got their Black Belts. If your test is the same as our test it was a 3 hour+ test, bring something soft to put on your chair!

Appx. 2-2.5 hour test (it was ALL black belt testing, 1st, 2nd & 3rd degree + black belt mid-terms)....but, was worth it and he passed!! :cheer2: Two very proud parents here :teeth: and one extremely proud 7 year old! (Still haven't thought of a gift....going shopping this weekend.....)

Congratulations!

I´m just a bit curious to know. Is this the same black belt adults get? The children mentioned here above all seem very young. I have never heard of a child here in Iceland recieving the black belt this young.

He & I thank you!

Yes it is.....the only difference is it took DS longer to earn it than an adult. Since the forms and different things to know are so long/big/great, they break it down into smaller "learning steps" for them. When they test for the next belt, they must all do the same things (the defenses, weapons, movements, etc...are all the same by belt level--not by age). So, it's taken a bit longer than an adult, but he has it and wants to continue to 2nd degree.... :faint:
