I finally upgraded to a new computer. It runs Vista. I have a lot of things on my laptop I need to transfer to this one. Things like all my iTunes songs, Photos, some .docs, web browsers favorite places (I have both Fox and IE I need to transfer) and things like that.

I really do NOT want to use some program, as I have heard they are a pain. Can I just get a memory stick and switch things over? My laptop runs XP if that makes any difference.

Is there a way to save Favorite Places from both IE and FF, then transfer them to my new computer?

WHat about AOL Saved mail?

Itunes?

Thanks!

I don't know if it's true or not but I heard XP and Vista don't really like each other.

I had the store where I bought my new computer do the transfer of all my files and make me a recovery disk for the operating system. Since the computer came preloaded with Vista you don't get the recovery disks unless you buy them ...

You can use a flash drive or an external hard drive to transfer those type files from the old to new PC. I have a Western Digital external drive and I just exported all my files onto the external drive then onto the new PC.

This method is also great because you can keep the files backed up on the external drive should your PC ever crash and you lose your hard drive.

Hope this helps

I used the settings and files transfer wizzard on windows XP, it worked great.
Only problem was for some reason it didn't want to do it via usb or ethernet cable, I had to use my thumb/usb drive.

I did it this way. I have a couple of flash drives (memory sticks - 2 GB) and a way old zip drive & was able to move stuff from 2 old computers that way. Takes longer, but this way you get to only move the stuff you want.

You will have to install any programs from their original cd/dvds.

A thumb drive is probably the simplest solution. They aren't that expensive and very handy. Another alternative is a USB to hard drive adaptor. With this you can connect your old hard drive to the new PC and copy your data. They work very well.

You can export favorites and cookies from IE by selecting File - Import and Export... A wizard will guide you throught the process.

For iTunes, you should be able to just fill the new program with songs from your iPod. You may need to adjust some settings in the new iTunes.

Good luck and keep that old PC around for insurance.

YES! Do keep your old PC, especially if it's a laptop.
My new laptop was running perfectly for 8 months. Then I downloaded Google's Gmail Notifier and it promptly crashed my computer. I had to reformat back to factory installation. Grrrr!

Until I could get around to doing that, I luckily had my old PC that I hadn't gotten around to wiping the info & selling on eBay. Thank God! I was able to more or less, seamlessly work off the old computer til the new was back up & running - crucial as I need web access everyday for business. (I did lose newer files I hadn't backed up.) Then I realized, the old PC has enough GB on it that I can store all my old info, instead of buying an external hard drive. I just uninstalled any extraneous programs clogging up my hard drive that I wouldn't need in an emergency, so I have that space freed up for storage. :thumbsup2

I recently bought a new laptop that runs Vista and it had an automatic thing (for lack of a better term ;) ) that asked if I wanted to transfer data from another computer. I checked the yes box and the program walked me through it. All of my old stuff was transferred without a problem. I thought that was part of Vista. :confused3

I know XP has it, so I would think that Vista does too
