My sister is a DVC member and I am going to use some of her points in December. I'm trying to figure out what a fair price to pay her for the use of the points. Planning on staying at studio Boardwalk Villa from Dec 8 - 12, if I calculated correctly looks like 46 points. Her daughter/my niece will be staying with me. They tried to get a 1 or 2 bedroom but no luck yet, only managed 2 studio rooms.

You can look on the rent trade board but it looks like anywhere from 8-12$ per point.

Boardwalk also has two levels of boardwalk or garden view and boardwalk standard (three booking categories two points levels). I would be very surprised if standard was available. Actually I am surprised anything was available, so for those dates it would either be 46 points or 62 points.

Considering you're taking her daughter, if I were her, I'd be happy if you just paid me the MF's for the stay. At BWV, 2011, dues are $ 5.45 per point.
So a stay that required 46 pts would cost $ 250.70.

YMMV/HTH

I agree with this logic. You are family, and are taking the owner's daughter along. Personally, I wouldn't charge anything in this scenario, but at most would probably look in the range above. Four nights in a studio for under $300 would be a win-win for each of you. Enjoy! :)

You know that two studios will not connect, correct? If you have more than four children, the adults will have to split up so that some are in each room.

I agree with this also. When I've had family members want to use our points (when we have enough), I just have them pay enough to cover our dues for the number of points they are using.

What about some of the cost for the buy in or loan if the contract was financed? I understand charging to cover MF's, but owning points is more than just MF's. If it were my sister, I would feel more comfortable paying around $7 per point. You are still getting a great deal while covering MF's and some of the buy in money.

I think you really need to include at least $2pp for the cost to buy in or the depreciation over a 50 year period (whatever side of the debate you want to be with).

Thus, a fair price is $5.45 + $2.00 = $7.45 and that is a real break even number. It is also lower than renting from anyone on the rent/trade board as the going rate is really $10-11pp. Anything less are distressed points.

If the owner financed the DVC, thn this is actually a loss, but that is much more complicated.

Depending on your situation and how the trip was planned, you may want to go in expecting to pay the $8-$12 per point rate that is typical on the DIS boards. Assuming that she wants to give you a break on the points could create hurt feelings. Let her suggest a lower price, if she is considering giving you a family rate. Either way, you are still paying a lot less than rack rate.

We are new DVC owners and my sister is renting points from us next year. We asked DSIS for $7 per point. She insisted on giving me $8.50 per point. :thumbsup2 She is still paying less than $700 for 7 nights in an AKV studio so she's happy and I'm grateful for having wonderful sisters. :)

Are you talking about December this year? If so, it's unlikely you will be able to get a reservation if it's not already booked. If you are talking next year, your sister will need to book it in January (assuming her home resort is Boardwalk).

IMO, a fair price is whatever she deems to be the fair price. I would just ask her what she wants and go from there.

If you set the price, and its too low, it could cause resentment on her part.

Everyone is different in terms of what they want for their points in terms of family so its best to let your sister decide.

I thought the same, Debbie, but the OP said they already have two studios but are trying to get a one or two bedroom villa.
