Hi! We are new to having a pool...ours is the regular chorinated. Our pool pump just died, and we need to replace it right away. Eventually, we would love to switch over to salt, but we can't afford to do it right now (apparently it would cost about 1k, is that right?)

What we need to know is...is there a certain pump that works with chlorine AND salt, so when and if we decide to switch to salt, we can use the same pump? Thanks!

We switched over from chlorine to salt this past year and are very happy that we did. If you do all of the work yourself the cost is between 600.00 to 800.00 depending on the size of your pool. Hiring a pool company would cost approximately 1500.00

Thank you DVC Sadie! Do you have any links for a "do it yourself" switchover site? If not, I will google. My DH is very handy (hangs drywall, installed our hardwood floors, runs electrical stuff thru the attic) so I am pretty sure he would be able to do it himself if he just had proper instruction.

So...if we were not planning to do the full switch right now...can we get a pool pump that works on chlorine for now...and that will work on saltwater later? I am not sure if the pump has anything to do with salt vs chlorine, but if it does...or if there is a pump that "goes both ways" lol, then we would want that one.

Thanks again!

I your Dh is handy he may be able to fix the pump. Our just went out and Dh bought a new motor $250 and replaced it himself.

Funny...Dh just told me that he thinks he can get the parts and fix it himself. BUT...he said the parts would be about $75...not $250. He said a brand new pump would be $300....so $250 would not be such a great savings! Then again, we are not really "up" on how much pool stuff costs...it is all new to us. he might go to the pool store and be in for a big shock!

Thanks, though! he will be glad to know another "DIYer" was successful!
