Good luck to you on this Agotta. I am home now, so we have a substantial decrease in household income. We live on DH paycheck, and I do take a little from DD for keeping the little one. She can include in her flexspend at work so this works for us. I use my "income" for groceries and incidentals. We use DH pay to support the house. We ALWAYS pay bills first. WE allocate to savings as though it was a bill. I stay out of stores whenever I can, and never shop online. We do not use a debit card, and I do not keep too much cash on me. I carry my household checkbook so I see how much is left before I use it. I did keep a small office to clean 2 x a month, and this is my spending money. DH and I split what is left. We eat at home most of the time. WHen I start to feel that I am running to close, I only purchase perishables from the store and use what is on my shelves. I now use instead of tossing because I forgot it was there.
We really stay away from CC as this can be a killer. It was a tough year last year, as we renovated our kitchen and Living area withan addition. We spent a LOT and only financed a minimal amount of it, so extras have been somewhat limited. We kept looking at the end result everytime we saw something we just thought we needed. We stopped before shopping for new furnishings because we would need to finance it and I cannot gaurantee that we could pay it before the interest kicked in. As it is I hate the payments that we need to make now...resent the interest. Will pay this down before anything else (except out January trip...no negotiation on this)
I think that you can do it if you both are on the same page, and are realistic in your budgeting. Also keep looking at what you both are working towards. It will happen.
