I just got rid of a verizon cell phone that was supposed to reach anywhere. Well, in Michigan it didn't reach well when I went to our place up north. I mostly just want one that would be good for an emergency when I am in the car. My son said maybe an analog-digital might be good. Anyone have good experience with just a basic one? Thanks in advance.

Well, don't buy ATT. We just toured the UP last week and my cell phone did not work most of the time.

herc.

Thanks Hercamore, it's really upsetting because especially in the UP is important because it's a long way to anywhere sometimes. I was wondering if a Tracphone might be good?

We were just in the UP this weekend and my Verizon (Samsung) phone roamed the whole time. We stayed in Mackinaw City and it worked just fine there. Did not use it in the UP, but it was on roam. It is a "tri-mode" phone. Have also used it at Old Key West (WDW) and never had a problem. I am due for a new one next month, so I need to start scoping them out, too!

we are hanging in there with our Verizon (Motorola) until the contract expires and then it is "so long charlie" to that company(November) . It is the worst phone I have ever had - haven't been to the UP but I am sure it wouldn't work there!

We have tried to improve the contract but everytime the response is, that we then would begin a new 2 year stint with them - sorry - gullible once - not again.

Can't wait to see which company wins the prize here::yes::

Good luck on your search for a "working" one in the area you need it.

I couldn't get my Kyocera from verizon to work even in a little town near Traverse City, Lewiston or Standish! What to do if an emergency! What about the analog digital phone?

We switched from Verizon to T-Mobile in June after having an informal comparison between my phone (Verizon), my Dad's phone (Sprint), and my mom's phone (T-Mobile) as we traversed across the state of New Mexico and through the mountains into Colorado. Mom's phone seemed to always have a signal, while mine and Dad's went no-bar at least half of the time. Don't know if the areas are comparable, but they seem to have a huge network across the U.S.

I just switched from Sprint to Verizon because Verizon had the best coverage in Michigan. I hope that I haven't made a wrong choice. We were in the Traverse City area last week and my phone worked great. We got really good coverage which we did not with Sprint last year.

The U.P. is tricky. Have you tried Alltel or US Cingular(?).

I used to have a cell phone with what is now alltel and I had heck of time getting signal in UP I've had better luck with my Verzion phone.

Check this site. http://www.howardforums.com/ Sort of like the DIS, but instead of Dieny junkies, they are cell phone junkies. You can lurk and learn a lot, or register and ask a question. I am only a lurker, LOL, and then only when I have a cell phone question. Good luck.
