Need help making DD Legal...

The thread title made me think the OP's daughter had immigration issues...

Cutting off the tshirt sleeves is a good solution. I was at a pool party where the kids trimmed off the sleeve hem, then cut the remainder into strips. They strung beads onto the strips and tied a knot at the end of each one. It was really cute!

She might be a little too old for arts & crafts like that, though.

I've bought many sleeveless t-shirts from Sears. They wear well and come in all sorts of colors.

DKNY has nice sleeveless blouses in lightweight sweater knits but they're probably too dowdy for a teenager.

He might want to see if an electric shaver works better, particularly in a hurried in-school situation.

His experience with an electric razor was the same as mine with an electric razor, irritates the skin, and doesn't get as close as a blade.
I have a Panasonic, a Remington and a Norelco razor sitting the the closet, $350 of electric razors, and a .29 cent disposable razor does a better job.

Not an issue now, he is out in the working world where shaving is optional.

What the crud kind of measurement is "4 fingertips"?

Yes, do you have sandals in my size? I need size "23 fingertips".

Hi, I was looking for a car? But I need it to be able to get 26,000 fingertips to the gallon.

Yeah, our school has 2" which is a little more clear! And nearly every shirt designed for teen girls these days requires a tank top underneath. I would second the cutting off the sleeves of a regular tee. My girls have been cutting shirts from thrift stores all summer into all kinds of configurations. I should keep that in mind and look for some shirts in solid colors that fit snugger like a cami- we could make them into school legal layers.

At my DDs school the measurement was 3 fingers. In reality, you could get by with two fingertips. And if you were wearing a shirt over the tank like your daughter is, you could wear a spaghetti strap tank since you have your shoulders covered.

The reason for the "fingertip" measurement is so that the wearer can't use "I didn't have a ruler" as an excuse. Ditto for the "fingertip-length" measurement of shorts and skirts. (Which doesn't work for me because I have really short arms, lol.)

Thinking about it, Catholic schools always sent home dress code rules in real measurements ... skirts could be no more than "# inches above the knee." Growth spurts resulted in tape measures and hems being let down. Rulers were always on the supply list, so I guess that's why we didn't have the fingertip measurement.

Macy's sells a top that might work. Search for "layering shell" on their website.

I need help finding tank tops or undershirts for DD16 to wear under her thin/sheer tops for school. A lot of the tops that are "in" right now are made from thin or sheer materials. In order to keep her "legal" according to the school district's dress code policy, she needs to wear a "legal" garment underneath. I'm needing a tank or undershirt that has straps that are at least 4 fingertips wide. I need scoop neckline as well. I found some on Amazon that worked as far as the strap width but they are crew neck so they come up too high to work with most of her tops. Just needing basic colors like white, black, navy, etc. Has anyone seen anything that may work. BTW, she is tiny...a size 0 or maybe 1. Thanks for any guidance on where to find something.

If she's wearing it UNDER her top/blouse, it doesn't really matter if it's 4 fingers wide.

They have those cami-tops at H&M, Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, etc. They're $5 and they come in every color of the rainbow.

My daughter wears them all the time and her school is just as strict about the dress code. Nothing has been said about them because they're being worn UNDER the top/blouse.

wrong! Our school changed rules this year. The tank top underneath the shirt - if showing - has to be 4 fingers wide. All our Camis Are out!

Downeast Basics has several good options - http://downeastbasics.com/teesandcamis.aspx. High school dress codes can be such a pain! When I was in high school, the rule was that shorts had to be at least past your fingertips. Because I have super long arms, I could never find shorts that met dress code. Oh how I wish that capris and bermudas had been around then!

It matters at my DD's school. If the girls are wearing a sheer top, the layer underneath has to meet dress code. For my DD, it is three fingers, which is a bit easier to find.

Oh my, I remember when you weren't allowed to wear jeans to h.s., and your skirt had to be long enough to touch the floor when you knelt on it. This was a public h.s.

Just a suggestion, I wear tanks under most of my shirts, but I buy them 1 or 2 sizes smaller than I usually wear, they fit much nicer under the tops.

IM CRYING! I was wondering the same thing....whose fingers? Is it just enough to cover bra strap?

This is SO cute! I think I might make these with my DD and niece this weekend. Thanks!

We have an awful time shopping for DD. Her school requires sleeves. No sleeveless tops allowed. Add to that the fact that top cannot be sheer, see through, lace, etc. If they are, the top worn underneath MUST have sleeves.

I can see not allowing see through tops, but requiring what amounts to a t-shirt underneath (no tanks) is ridiculous. I would never let DD wear a sheer shirt to school without a tank underneath, but putting a sleeved t-shirt underneath just doesn't work. That means she has to wear a lot of t-shirts to school.

We had the "no sleeveless tops" in school, but fashions were different back then and nice sleeved tops were easier to find.

At least it is not a uniform. DD9 can either wear a specific plaid skirt from the uniform store or khaki slacks with navy or white polo. No visible logos on anything. It has been HORRIBLE trying to find khakis to fit her. She is a dancer and competitive cheerleader, has been since she was 3 so she has a myscular lower body and a small waist. Kids sizes aren't built for that. They are basically retangles with no difference between waist and hip or thigh and knee. By the time they go over her legs, the waist is so huge they fall down and they are way too long. After several hours of trying on and a few tears we bought juniors 000 short khakis as Aeropostale today. I am going to have to take about and inch and a half off the length, but at this point I just don't care as long as they fit.
