I am planning a quick trip in XXX and need points, to add with the 38 I have expiring 2/28. How do I do this? I need to set a reservation ASAP while there is an availability, but don't know how to do the process?

Thanks!

DDD

Note, XXX denotes that the travel month has been removed, as well as the number of points requested so as not to be considered a Point Transfer Wanted post. This was moved here from the R/T Board, as questions aren't permitted there. Thanks, Chuck S

You have several options. You can borrow your own points from your next use year. You can check the rent-trade boards here on the Dis, or you can purchase a reservation from David, who is a sponsor on these boards. There may be other options, but these are the only ones I know. Good luck and enjoy your vacation.

I would try to transfer in the number of points you need to complete your reseration. Go to the rent/trade board to find someone to help you.

I think the OP is actually asking about "how" a transfer is actually done..like what info is needed by th other owner, etc. As I've never personally done a transfer, and procedures rules do change from time to time, maybe someone who has recently done a transfer can comment. :)

This is how I go about it:

I don't rent points because I prefer to purchase transfer points to combine with my existing points, then I can make and control my own reservation. I find someone on the rent/trade boards that has about the amount of points I need +/-, I PM that person and I make sure that the points they are advertising are indeed transferable and are for the appropriate use year that I need them, some points can't be transferred. (If they aren't sure of these 2 things, have them call MS to make sure)

I've used Paypal 5 times, personal check once over the last 10 years and have never had a problem. The 1st time I was apprehensive but I went on the boards, found a DVC'er with the points and then looked up their posts and threads, start date, and what I saw made me feel comfortable that I was dealing with a reputable person.

Once they get the money, no matter how you choose, they call and make the transfer into your account. Immediately thereafter you can call and make your reservation. The only thing is that you will not be able to see on your Member screen those points you purchased and had transferred in. Only MS sees them, at least it's always been that way, even as late as May 2010. They will show up as used after your stay!

It's not as scary or complicated has people make it out to be, the 1st plunge is the hardest. I've met some very nice people (over the phone) doing these transactions over the years.

Another option depending on how many points you need, you could also purchase 24 +/-points directly from MS (one time transaction) and combine them with a points transfer to only get what you really need.

I've never negotiated price, I always paid what the owner asked, and it's been $10 a point every time. You can only do one transfer per UY but one year I bought 2 inot the same year, and no one said anything or charged me, I think it's a grey area!

Good Luck!

I've done it (transfer) a few times a couple of years ago. Both parties can only have one transfer transaction during a use year. That's either coming in or going out. The person that is going to have points taken out of their account is going to make the call. They need the full name of the person/family they are transfering to and they also need their member number. Getting their full address and home phone number is also a good idea but can't remember if it's needed. The outgoing DVC owner makes the call to Member Services and tells them to make the transfer. Now the sender of the points might be requested by MS to fax some sort of "I give you permission to transfer these points to..." and I have had that happen but I've also just gone through the process and they haven't requested that fax. Of course MS will give you the fax number.... I don't think it took very long (that day or the next) for the points to show up in the receiving account.

Note: Make sure that they transfer the right points for the use year dates you need them for. As long as the sender can make the exact reservation dates you need with his account with those type of transfer points then you should be good to go. Keep in mind that you can transfer different use year points and if I remember right you can bank those points but you can't borrow them... Oh and you cannot transfer banked or borrowed pts.

Y-ASK

OP, your biggest problem will be availability. You take the risk of transferring points for a reservation that is gone by the time you get the deal done.

You'd be better off borrowing your own points to get the nights you need.

Is it few enough points that you could do the point rental direct from DVC? I think you rent up t o 20 or 25 (sorry, can't remember the number) points from DVC to fill out a reservation as long as it is booked after the 7 month window opens. Since you are talking about next month, that would work.
