We stayed at Circus Circus in 2001 and would recommend it.
Make sure you check out the shows available in all hotels before deciding which ones to see.
The MUST do of a trip to Vegas has to a visit to the Grand Canyon, words cannot describe how wonderful it is!!!

Love Vegas! Been a zillion times and I'm getting married at Paris and having a reception at the Venetian next Vday!

Hotels would depend on your price range... Bellagio and Venetian are wonderful but I also like the Rio because it's right OFF the strip so you have a spectacular view OF the strip :)

Great shows: Mystere, Penn & Teller, Blue Man Group

Don't miss the Bellagio fountains!

We went to Vegas for the first time last month and stayed at Monte Carlo. It was a very nice resort with a great pool. DH and I liked gambling elsewhere, tho. We had a lot of fun at NYNY, MGM and Excalibur.:D

I have only been three times. I like staying on the strip in the middle of things. I am spoiled with Disney's themed hotels so I like those. I have stayed at the Venetian but it is a bit expensive. I stayed at the Paris Hotel for a great price right after they opened. And the last stay was at NYNY.
All three were great. The best location for the best price is at Paris. Depending on when you go you can get great rates, the room is nice and it is located in the middle of everything.
If you are able to postpone the trip a bit, you can get incredible rates the first 2-3 weeks of December.

I'm going to Las Vegas in about 8 days, and staying at Paris for the second time. It really is a great location, and the rooms are really beautiful.

I would definitely stay on the south end of the strip though. Depending on your budget, Bellagio, Venetian, Paris, Caesars Palace and Mandalay Bay are all beautiful hotels. I personally would stay away from Excalibur because it was looking a little run down the last time we were there. Treasure Island is also fairly nice, and a pretty good location. Stratosphere and Circus Circus are at the far north end, and not as nice as they used to be.

A great website with lots of info and ratings/comments about all the hotels/casinos/restaurants/shows is www.a2zlasvegas.com

If you have any specific questions, please let me know. I haven't stayed in all the hotels, but I've visited them. :D

DW and I have been lots of times.

Where to stay: since you're not bringing the children, I'd avoid CircusCircus. My advice is to stay center strip - that's from TI/Mirage/Venetian to Paris/Bellagio. You can walk to so many different places. Depending on your budget: cheap - Imperial Palace; mid - Flamingo/Bally's; higher - Mirage; light cigars with $100 bills - Bellagio. Here's a site I always recommend: CheapoVegas: it has humorous - but very detailed - reviews of all the LV hotels; their theming, restaurants, shows, gambling and links to the official web sites. Also good is the LVOL link previously posted.

Too many shows to recommned - here's a few: Legends in Concert at the IP; Blue Man Group at Luxor; Jubilee at Bally's.

Viva Las Vegas!

I go to Vegas at least 1-2 times a year, BF's dad lives there. I won't even try to recommend hotels because we've never stayed in one, but I do agree that you'll probably want to stay on or near the Strip. Downtown is usually for people who are more interested in gambling, although if you have a car, I would also pay a visit there to see the Fremont Street Experience. I also have better luck with Gambling there too. If you are going in August or later, a new outlet mall is opening in Downtown too.

As far as things to do, there are MANY, even if you aren't big time gamblers, which BF and I are not. I'll just list them, some may require a car:
* Shows: Mystere, Siegfried & Roy, O, Danny Gans are some of the popular ones and have good reputations
* Outlet Malls: Belz Outlet (near the airport end of the Strip), Primm (an outlet mall on the CA/NV stateline, about a 45 minute drive, sorry, can't remember it's real name!), Las Vegas Premium Outlets (the new one opening in Downtown)
* "Normal" Shopping Malls: Boulevard (my favorite, on Maryland Parkway), Galleria at Sunset (in Henderson, across Sunset Station), Meadows (I think this one was in Northern Las Vegas, have only been there once)
* Malls in Casinos or on the Strip: Fashion Show Mall (on the Strip, just expanded), Forum Shops (Caesar's Palace), Shops at Aladdin (Aladdin Hotel & Casino)
* Mirage: be sure to check out the "volcano show" outside where the volcanoes erupt at night; they also have a "Secret Garden of Siegfried & Roy," I haven't been for several years, but it used to be $10 and the money went to conservation efforts, and you got to see the dolphins that belong to the Mirage and then walk thru a little mini-zoo with S&R's animals (tigers, elephants, etc.).
* Treasure Island: there is/was a pirate show that occured every evening at set intervals...however, I thought I heard somewhere that they were doing away with this, or maybe just changing it?
* Caesar's Palace: there are statues that come to life, and the sky changes from day to night as you walk through. They also have a "Race to Atlantis" ride which I thought was pretty fun.
* Venetian has gondola rides, though I've heard the wait can be pretty lengthy. Still looks like a pretty resort to walk around.
* Paris has an Eiffel Tower and also is very pretty.
* The Stratosphere offers a GREAT view of LV. I've been to the restaurant there several times and really like the food a lot. Pricey by LV standards, but comparable to any good restaurant in other cities. There are also a couple of rides up there. (Unless you're eating in the restaurant, there's a charge to go up there.)
* Bellagio has an amazing water show in the "lake" fronting the hotel. They used to have an art gallery too, but I heard it closed. I've also heard good things about their buffet.
* Red Rock Canyon: I think it's 30-45 minutes away, but if you're looking for something nature-oriented, might want to check it out.
* Mt. Charleston: also about 30-45 minutes away, beautiful just to drive around. They may have a few trails too if you're interested in hiking.
* Hoover Dam: really an awesome sight. You can just stay at the top and walk around, or you can take the tour. Beware if you're claustrophobic though, you have to travel is a small elevator to the bottom, and the ride lasts a while.
* Lake Mead: offers a variety of water craft, boats, jet skis, etc., or you can just go swimming.

Anyway, that's all I can think of at the moment, but I'm sure I'll remember something else as soon as I finalize this post!

I know its hard to believe, but i actually love LV more than i do WDW. I got married in LV Sept 2001 and went back last year for my wedding anniversary. On our first visit we stayed at Caesars Palace in a palace tower room. This was a fantastic location and room, the two person spa tub was just wonderful. On our return trip we split our stay between the Venetian and the Bellagio. Both of these hotels were wonderful but the service at the Bellagio was far the best. If you havent already sorted you room out i would recommend 'signing' the quest books of hotels your intered in staying at on their websites. You will then recieve email offers which are not normally advertised. Or if you dont mind taking a risk check out biddingfortravel.com as they list the hotels that are available on priceline.

My other tip would be to go to the comedy club in Harrahs called the improv club, we have been twice now and cant wait to get back.

Also the ezboard website that Steve recommended is a great way to find out info on Vegas, the people are very friendly and helpful. They have helped me plan my two trips.

Enjoy your trip.

LuvTigger: that's one of the best lists I've ever seen!

Pixie Power: DW and I are with you on the LV bandwagon. We first went about 5 years ago; DW was uncertain if she'd like it. Now we make at least 2 trips a year :) ! I see a lot of similarity betweenn WDW and LV - and LV can be cheaper, and is a 24/7 kind of place.

mrsmom: You're getting a lot of good advice here!

Definately go to the different hotel websites and sign their guest books, they will often send you special deals. For a Vegas newbie I would suggest staying in the middle of the strip. Bellagio is beautiful, but pricey, its kind of the GF of Vegas!;) I'd also suggest Paris or Aladdin, both are very nice and less expensive then Bellagio. Bally's or Flamingo are also great locations and often have really good deals.

If you plan on seeing any shows you might want to book them ahead of time, a lot of them sell out. My favorite is Mystere at Treasure Island! A great, cheap afternoon show is Mac King at Harrahs. He is a magician/comedian and is hilarious!

Be sure to check out all the free shows, there are foutains at Bellagio, a volcano at Mirage, two "statues come to life" shows in the Forum Shops at Caesaers. Treasure Island has a pirate show, but they are revamping it and I don't think it reopens until October.

Check out the discussion boards on www.lvol.com there is a lot of useful information!

Have fun!! Vegas is my favorite vacation spot, even more so then WDW (horrors! )!

How could I forget to mention other rollercoasters (there's one on the Stratosphere)???

The New York New York Hotel has a huge coaster...Circus Circus has an indoor theme park (not really that big, but there are a couple of good rides in there -- roller coaster and a water ride)...and the Desperado at Buffalo Bills on the Stateline (if you go to the mall at Primm, you'll see the coaster. There is also a Star Trek Experience at the Hilton, but I have yet to go there.

We go there a minimum of once a year, and there are still so many things I haven't done, so as you can see, you should have a lot to keep you busy!

I agree with the above post, try to stay in the center of the strip. We were there in June for the 1st time ever and stayed with friends of ours at the Polo Towers( timeshare-across form Monte Carlo). We hardly gambled at all :p , we didn't have time. We were to busy checking out everything Bellagio watershow, Ceasers Palace Forum Shops,Venetian,MGM,NYNY,etc.

We also can't wait to go back............I think it will be at least a once a year(4 day) trip for us from now on.
