Need help from Scrapbookers!!

I am soooo NOT a scrapbooker it isn't even funny. But our class at DS's school is putting together a scrapbooking basket for the school raffle. Now I'm only going to spend $X amount, but I would like to make that amount go as far as possible. Since I wouldn't know if this stuff was a good price, an average price, or way overpriced, I need your help!

Where do you buy cheap scrapbooking supplies that are still a fairly good quality? This will end up someone's memories, so I don't want anything that will fall apart. And what are good prices v. inflated prices v. typical price?

Help, help, help!!!!

There are sooo many places to buy scrapbooking supplies today! If you're trying to get the best deal, I would suggest Joann or Michaels. You can get a 40% off coupon from the newspaper and purchase an entire kit relatively inexpensively. They're already packaged for you and everything!

If you want something that will look nice without spending alot of $, look at the new book sets at Joanns. They are regular $19.99, use a 40% off. Some are on sale here in Michigan starting tommorrow for $9.99. They have an album, paper, tons of embellishments. I am heading there myself to get a few tommorrow for Christmas presents. Very nice for the $! Hope this help!

Another thought might be to just get a giftcard for one of your local scrapbook stores or Michael's/Joanns. I know that I am more likely to buy tickets for a raffle that includes a gc - than I can choose what I want!

One more thing - if you have a little time Oriental Trading has some cute stuff!

Hobby Lobby runs 50% off sales frequently, and Wal-Mart has good prices on their scrapbooking supplies. It sounds like you are putting together a "starter" basket. If this is what you are doing, I'd say get a neutral colored album (that could fit any occassion/purpose), a pair of scissors ($1 at Hobby Lobby), a corner rounder punch, acid free glue sticks, a pack of multi colored acid free paper, a pack of multi colored acid free pens, and a cropping tool. These are the tools I started my first album with. These are all basic starter supplies/tools.

Yes, Joanns Fabrics. Sometimes they have free shipping codes.

I've never known anyone who bought the Oriental Trading scrapbook stuff. I know my scrapping friends look at it but never order. They are always afraid it is cheap junk. I've never looked at the catalog to judge for myself. I don't even know what they offer.

I have found some VERY nice high end supplies at Big Lots for $1 each! Some of these things sell at my local scrapbook store for up to $7. Might want to check there....

What about some nice adhesives? As a paper crafter, i.e. I make cards, and do a little of scrapbooking stuff I think it would be awesome to have a variety of "Glue-Dot" type of products. Just remember, that it should be acid-free.

There are many other types of similar products. I cannot imagine that there would be a scrapper around that didn't need adhesives. Plus, this wouldn't be an issue of "it might not be the color/style" that the scrapper likes, they all need adhesive.

Our Michaels craft store has some adorable mini scrapbook kits (I forget the brand name but it's a popular one) clearanced for $4 right now. Also, Joanns fabric has a good sale coming up starting tomorrow-plus they have a dollar scrapbooking section were everything coordinates together. And last but not least, I found some adorable scrapbooking items at the dollar tree.

I've found some sets of stickers, papers, page protectors, small scrapbooks, etc at Dollar Tree. You can put a bunch of this stuff in a basket and not spend a lot of $$! We also have a REALLY cheap discount store in my area (Queens) called AMAZING SAVINGS. They closed down most of the stores nationally, but this one remained open. ANd they have TONS of supplies EVEN CHEAPER than Dollar Tree! Check out your discount stores...

BTW, I've checked out Oriental Trading scrapbooking supplies and they aren't THAT cheap. Some of their stuff is reasonably priced, but I find some stuff to be expensive, too! Just look around!

At JoAnn ETC they have a line by Colorbok (I LOVE this brand) where everything is $1. I had never seen it before as JoAnn ETC is 45min away, I liked a LOT of the stuff on the racks and I couldn't believe it was only $1. They had a theme, then paper, embellishments, stickers, ribbons, etc, that all coordinated. There were 8 diff. themes. I highly recommend checking this stuff out, it's very good quality, name-brand, and cheap!

Someone mentioned the Joanns pack, it is by KI Memories and if you can get one either on sale or with a 40 % coupon it would be a good deal. They have 4 different color combos and the pack comes with paper, an alphabet, epoxy stickers, ribbon.

I have ordered from Oriental Trading and I do think alot of their scrap stuff is cheaply made. The paint comes off the brads and like that.

If you have a Hobby Lobby they carry good brands.

If you are not a scrapper how do you know what to buy? There are a lot of people that won't use certain things like the deco sizzors. I would suggest a GC or Joanns has a $1 of SB stuff and it is decent stuff if you want to put some of that in a basket.

Joanns is having a sale tomorrow on the kit of KI Memories stuff $9.88 normally $19.99. That is a great deal and it comes in 4 colors.

I have ordered from OT before, it is good quality but the shipping is pretty high, unless you can find a coupon for them.

Some JoAnn's will take Michaels coupons as well

If you can find a local scrap store, many of them will let you use their die cut machine if you purchase paper from them. That may help as well.

And then there are also classes at scrap stores. Sometimes they have good prices on a class for doing a book - check around.

Ok, all I know is that "the raffle baskets have been a huge success in the past"-- confused here, the school just opened this year -- "and this year your classes theme is scrapbooking. Suggested items to send in are acid free paper, stickers, decorative brads & eyelets. But feel free to send in any scrapbooking items". DS has 17 kids in his class, and I planned on spending $10-$15 on our donation. The room mom will then put it all together in a basket. Donations are due to the room mom by Nov. 21.

Within 5 minutes of my house we have Joanns, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Big Lots, 99 cent store, and a huge scrapbooking store (which I hear is wonderfully, but pricey). I'm also not far from Walmart, Super Walmart, Target and Garden Ridge.

How much "stuff" should I get with $1? A single sheet of paper? A small set of stickers? How much stuff would I get with a starter set type of thing?

I'm not interested in this basket, but there are others I'm sure I'll be interested in. I'm hoping those with a theme that appeals to me do well with it so I can score a deal (if I win), so I too want to do well.

Maybe the person who made that comment is coming from a different school, where it was a huge success? Speaking from the school where my DD went to k-5, they were a huge success there too.

You may want to talk to your room mom, this type of container might give her a nice, useful "thing" to put the donations together.

Another idea - which is a HUGE value...I jumped onto the Hobby Lobby website, and if you have a chance to get out there TONIGHT, they have a 12x12 paper pack (180 sheets) on sale for $9.99, normally this is $20. Of course, the sale ends tonight.

Also, the Target dollar spot is half off today and they have some scrapbook items. Little plastic packages of brads, eyelets, gems, epoxy stickers, etc. Great deal there. And I second the Big Lots idea - I have gotten terrific deals there. You can really get a lot for $15 in these two places. Have fun!

I just want to thank everyone. I really had no idea if anything was a good value. I wouldn't want to spend $1 on a single sheet of paper only to find out that normally you can get 25 sheets for $5. Dollar stores aren't always the "best deal", even when cheap. Now I know what to expect, what is fairly good value and quality, and where to look for both the quality & cost. And I'm sure whoever wins this raffle basket thanks you too!

to all who have helped and may give some more great ideas later. I'm going to buy some in a couple of days, just to make sure I have the best of the best ideas. Good start so far!
