The one and only time I have ever been to Disneyland was back in 1981. I'd love to go in May or early June. I remember being in a motel across the street from Disneyland. My parents don't remember where we stayed. Any ideas of what it could have been, and if it's still there? Is there any benefit to staying at a Disney resort hotel? I'm starting to read posts here on this board. (I'm a WDW pro, but not DL.) Are there any other resources you'd suggest I research before booking a vacation there?

There are loads of motels across the street. Many have been bulldozed. Many have been remodeled and a few are left that haven't done much. Here is a view from above with lots of them listed.

You may be able to locate where the place was and ask more questions here to see if it is still around.

I have stayed at visited disneyland 4 times in the recent past. Each time we stayed off site and enjoyed it very much. You can save a ton of $$$ and unlike WDW , Disneyland is not as spread out so you are very close if and when you need to head back to the hotel, acutally....I'd say some are just as close if not closer then those that are located inside the park.
Our most recent trip we stayed at the Hyatt Regencey, it was located down the street from DL , but had a shuttle that ran very often to and from the hotel. I would highly suggest you look into them. We got an awsome rate and was even able to upgrade our room for only 20 dollars!

I think it may have been a Best Western. We'll be travelling with a 12 year old and a 2 year old. I'd like to walk to park rather than fold up stroller. Any suggestions as to which ones?

There were lots of Best Westerns. The Apollo Inn. The Cosmic Age Lodge and many more. Two of them are gone. The Best Wester Stovals Inn and Pavillions were part of the group (though they had different names back then.)
The closest places (that are decent)to book are The Best Wwestern Park Place Inn, The Carousel Inn, The Tropicana, The Desert Inn and Suites.
Our two favorites are a hair farther... The Howard Johnson and the Candy Cane Inn.

We just stayed at the Best Western Park Place Inn last week and it is directly across the street from the entrance to DLR. I'd guess it's no more than 100 yards from the hotel's lobby door to the entrance to DLR.

BWPPI was reasonably priced, clean and we had a decent amount of room. We've stayed at ASMo our last two trips to WDW and I thought BWPPI compared favorably to All Star Resort rooms. You just don't get the Disney theming!
