I'm usually pretty good at this stuff, but this has me stumped. My MIL made a wall hanging for her kids about 30 some years ago, and it has been passed down to us. It is adorable overall, but the fabric she used as a background is a very obvious seventies yellow, and it just looks so dated. I want to reframe it and put it in our son's room, and I need to know what color will help minimize the yellow so I can mat it. To give you an idea of the color scheme in his room, his walls are bright tangerine orange, his bedding and dresser are a light/bright green and he has blue and khaki accents. Probably sounds pretty tacky but it's very cute, I swear- safari theme... Anyway, I tried the green and the khaki (both gingham patterns to coordinate with our soon to be son's crib bedding) and they just look awful next to it. I think orange is out because the walls are orange and it would make it look even more dated, and I think blue may be too bold. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ETA- At this point all I can think of is a trip to the fabric store to find a multi-colored pattern to mat it with, but I worry that it will be too busy...

I was working on it, here ya go. It really doesn't show how yellow it is, so it's not much to go on...

Here is the crib bedding we are using, I can't take any pics of the room because my son is sleeping. Again, the colors don't show as they really are, but when do they on a computer screen... For a very large pic where you can see the details of the crib bedding, click here : http://www.babysupermall.com/main/products/lai/lai84004v.html?aff=frog and click on the image, it will give you the option to make it HUGE!

I would go with the blue. Why not just take it with you and put the different mats around it? That is what we do when we are having something framed.

I'm doing it myself, or I would. Thanks for the suggestion though!

How about a thin black edge around it? Is the edge of your bedding black? I'd try to match that.

I would double mat it with black next to the yellow, then a light blue (to match the bedding and soften the line between the black and the orange wall). The black will frame it like the bedding and "pop" it a bit, while the blue brings color contrast for the yellow and added dimension. Good luck, I LOVE that bedding (but I have an AKL office, so that's just me! :teeth:

You can still take the quilt into the craft store where you are buying the mat and figure out a color. I would find something that looks the best for the quilt and ignore the bedding. With a new baby on the way and your son getting older, how much longer will he be using the bedding anyway?

Thanks for the replies everyone, I'm keeping them all in mind. The border of the bedding isn't black, it's a dark brownish green (like I said, the pic isn't very reliable for perfect color matches) but I will apply the same theory ;) .

I would do white.... it will brighten the yellow up.

And actually, so what if it looks "old", it adds to the character and charm. :o)

Its super cute, too - BTW. :earsgirl:

I'd go with the blue too but I was also thinking purple, like the turtle in the bedding (if that is purple) like a navy/violet color.

LOL, nope it's just plain blue, a little dark but not navy.

I would go with a light/dark grey. Maybe a smokey color. It shouldn't make the yellow stand out and shouldn't look bad with the other colors already in there. Besides. I kinda like the color grey. :teeth:

lol, it's purple on my screen! ok, I'm changing my reply to just blue. You are so right about the picture, because I see a purple turtle and black edging.

what about using the green from the edging?
