I am looking for an adaptive handle bar for my mom's wheelchair. I am a tall person and have to slouch a little to push my mom's wheelchair which isn't user friendly for a caregiver. I saw someone visiting DHS that had a handlebar that raised it to be more user friendly for the caregiver of the person in the wheelchair. Would anyone know of what I am talking about, provide a site via a PM (if needed) to find one... or any thing? I have googled, talked to the DME company we got the chair through and not having much luck. It's a standard wheelchair (Guardian). I greatly appreciate ANY assistance.

Those kind of handles are usually called "Stroller Handles".

I looked and was only able to find some for some specific models of wheelchairs - they are usually only an option on 'custom' wheelchairs that are ordered to fit the individual patient. I know that kind of handle was an option on the last wheelchair we ordered for our DD.

I found one here that might work for you.
Extension handle
it's not that much higher, but being able to grab it anywhere might help.

If it doesn't work, the picture will at least give your DME provider an idea of what you might want.

I found this through a google search. I don't know how reliable this company may be, though...you know how some online companies are.

I found some others.

Alco company : they have 3 types
1) Even though they show this type just down or pointing sideways, you could also put them up for more height:

2) This one doesn't extend up, but you could use the idea for a 'do it yourself' adaptation. PVC pipe is inexpensive, strong and easy to work with.

3) This one is similar to the first one I found.

Sue and Chuck... Thank you! The last one of the 3 you found today Sue is close to what I saw. It just didn't have the clamps. I think that gives a bit more height.

I greatly appreciate your help.

I am moving this I the disABILITIES Community Board, which is more for general questions.
