We are going on 4 day cruise next week and kids are missing school (8 & 10). I thought I'd get them to track the ship's position on a map using longitude and latitude. the problem is that port canaveral and bahamas are so close that need a smaller, more detailed map. Most hurricane tracking charts are marked at 5 degree increments. Trouble is there is 2-3 degrees latitude separating florida from the bahamas, and about the same degree of separation on longitude. Most movement of the ship within one cruise would be concentrated within a one inch section of the map. I have been informed by someone wiser that "maps" are for land and "charts" are for water. But this didn't really help with my internet search! Those maps from NOAA are expenside ($40+) but still couldn't find exactly what I wanted. Has anyone ever done this before? I thought a neat skill to bring back to school for show and tell. (okay, okay, the guilt is setting in a bit!). In all honestly we do try to get an education or two on these trips . My son just finished a unit on resaissance and reforemers and we can't wait to get to spacesip earth to see the guttenburg press! thanks for map help.

Here are some FREE sites that might help
http://hurricane.accuweather.com/phoenix2/images/hurricane/tracking/bahamas.pdf

And I finally found the one I was looking for - and it's from the University of Texas so I think that counts as educational:
http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/americas/bahamas.gif

The longitude and latitude of Cape Canaveral is 28.47N, 80.55W so it's just off the top left of the last map.

FYI, Castaway Cay is the little dot of an island just south of Moore's Island at 77.32.283 west longitude by 26.4.608 north latitude. FYI, it's listed on public maps as Gorda Cay.

Hope this helps your kids have a great educational time.

thanks for the maps. I already had the one you used. Details were great but wanted more longitude and latitude markings as this will be first exposure for my kids. Bahamas tracking map from AccuWeather is a new one with great markings. The other map is great but a disclaimer warning against duplication and a lack of lableling of the longitude and latitude makes me think it's a no-no to use it. Thanks a bunch.
