I am wanting to buy my husband a smoker for his birthday but know nothing about them can someone please give me some help and I would like to keep it at around 200 if possible or cheaper would be great thanks.

We have a Masterbuilt electric smoker. Very easy to use & under $200. I got it on QVC, but I know I have seen them in stores - Sears maybe? We had a charcoal one first but it was hard to get the hang of how to keep the temp & how much wood to use. The electric one is simple & we use it all the time!

We have the same one from QVC. I am not allowed to use it though! Its strictly DH's baby! He loves it!

We have a propane smoker that I got DH for father's day last year. I got it at Bass Pro Shops and paid about $180 for it. We researched electric v. gas, and found that the heating element goes out on the electric ones after awhile, it was the biggest complaint. DH loves his.

You definitely need to find out from your DH first what he wants in a smoker. DH finally bought himself the Weber Smokey Mountain. It's pricier than you want, at around $299, but he loves it. It is not electric or propane, as he didn't want it to be. It's important to him to build his own charcoal or wood fire, custom build it himself to get what he wants out of it. It's part of the fun and challenge for him, and we both like the flavor better.

I had to read this thread because I couldn't figure out why you needed to find "a smoker"...as in a person who smokes. Hahaha. SMH. Hope you find a great one! :rotfl:

I also have an 18 1/2 Weber Smokey Mountain cooker. I can't say enough good things about it. There is an entire web site dedicated to it. It's called The Virtual Weber Bullet. The forum is also an invaluable resource.

My DH was given a Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker for this past Christmas and he absolutely loves it and it does a wonderful job.

I agree with both of these posts. An electric smoker is a good intro, easy to use, and the food still tastes great.

That said, the heating element on mine went out in under 2 years.

There's a few different styles. I prefer one with the firebox on the side, the grate in 2 sections. The built in temp gauge doesn't seem very accurate to me, so that's not a necessity. I've had 2 over the past 15 years and my family loves Sundays when I smoke chickens or a turkey or, the real favorite, RIBS!
The last one I bought at Sears and it wasn't expensive---maybe $129?

If you get the split grate, it's also easy to use the grill to cook via direct heat I.e., for hamburgers or steaks.

Well, thanks a lot! Because of this post we are now forced to smoke a pork butt this weekend :thumbsup2 Just got the taste buds focused like a laser on bbq.

That is what I thought too. I was like what???????

Sears, cabellas, bass pro, probably all sell them around that price. I use a propane smoker all the time, I used to have the stackable sectioned barrel type, but upgraded to the cabinet type and love it! I also have a charcoal grill called a bubba keg that I smoke in from time to time, but those are over $200. He will love what ever smoker you get, but might want to upgrade in a year or two. Maybe a giftcard so that he can choose it.

Not smoking anything, it hasn't been above 30 in the past month.... :scared:

I so want to do a pork butt, but we generally do our picnicing for lunchtime and I can't see myself firing up the smoker at 9:00 the night before and checking on it all night long. I generally just get up around 5 am and start ribs.

Someone mentioned the temp gauge. Never even look at that gauge. You want to know what the temp is on the rack where you are cooking. 225° on the gauge on the smoker is going to be way too hot where the meat is.

I have just a cheapie Brinkmann ($179 I think) upright charcoal smoker. It will fire up and run at 225° all day long, but I can't get it any higher than that. That would be important to crispy skin on poultry as you want to smoke poultry at around 275°. Lower temp with poultry will work, it will just take a lot longer and you won't get crispy skin. I ended up smoking a chicken for the first time for like 6 hours (I expected to cook for 4) and still had to finish it on the grill.

Will say though, even with my cheap Brinkmann, the ribs were to die for. Known as the best way to smoke ribs, the 3-2-1 method:

Rub and cook with smoke at 225° for 3 hours
Wrap in foil with a splash of apple juice and cook for 2 hours, no smoke needed.
Unwrap the foil, sauce with BBQ sauce and finish for 1 hour.
Mouthwatering! I had a smoke ring halfway through the meat.
