Need help figuring out how to post

Hello All,

After lurking and enjoying the boards for a couple of months, I finally joined a few weeks ago. I am slowly learning how to navigate and post replies. This is the first thread I am starting and hoping it will work. I wanted to ask regarding PTRs and TRs. We have been so many times that I would love to share some of our experiences. However, I am not sure how people post PTRs and TRs. I am assuming you go to the trip forum and post a new thread. However, do people type their entries out on word and then just paste it into the thread or do they just work directly on the boards? Also, if I do write it out as a word document first with pictures inserted into it, will the pictures also make it over when I paste or do I have to upload my pics to photobucket? We use a Mac and I was unsure if there was a way to insert the pictures straight from my hard drive rather than first going to an online photo site. Would love some advice/guidance. Thank you.

Very good questions. It is really up to personal preference as to whether you type your report in Word or directly to the board, but my recommendation would be to do it in word first, or to at least copy before you submit if you do it directly. While we do our best to keep the DIS running smoothly, there have been many times that I have typed a reply to something and had the boards go down for a few minutes, or had an "unable to connect to server" sort of error, or something happens with my internet connection. And if you have just poured your heart and soul into a long post it is very frustrating to lose it.

Photos have to be uploaded to a hosting site, no matter what type of computer you use. This is a safety measure to prevent anyone from attaching files that could be harmful. Because the photo link is just a line of code you can go ahead and get that code from Photobucket or where ever you are using and put it into your report in Word and then copy/paste the entire thing here. Just make sure to Preview to check that everything worked.

2 things to keep in mind-- we do have a limit of how many words can be used in one post and also of how many images-- and those include your photos and any smilies you use. I don't remember what the word/character limit is (it is pretty big), and I think the image limit is around 25ish. So you may have to just break your report into more parts after you type it out.

Thank you for answering my initial questions. It certainly helps me understand the process of how to post. I was also wondering how one accesses their own thread once it has been started. Does is show up on the user CP or does one have to actually subscribe to one's own thread to follow it and respond? Also, how do people attach links so that if a reader wants to just read the reports and not the comments they are able to access them directly? I have seen people do this in a way so that you can go from one post to the next from the first page.

I appreciate your input.
 

There are instructions in the FAQ at the top of this forum on how to subscribe to a thread. The default should have you subscribed already, but an easy way to tell is to take a look at this forum page, and see if there is a check mark to the far left of the thread title for this thread. If so then you are subscribed. If not then you probably need to change your setting.
