I just read through this thread today and I have to say I am so happy for you that everything worked out!
While it wasn't a lay-off, two weeks before our wedding this past August DH decided he absolutely had to quit his job.
He was literally taking major abuse from his employer, sending him on back to back jobs on the road with no rest, revoking days off, constantly threatening to fire their employees if they didn't obey their every wish. Two weeks before the wedding they were purposely taking other people off jobs, and putting him on them and even went so far as to start scheduling him on jobs coming back the morning of the wedding and leaving the day after. (it was a power thing for them). All this for what in our area is not even average pay.
We couldn't just postpone our wedding two weeks out so he had no choice but to quit or lose the 11,000 we just spent on our wedding and possible lose each other. We decided he had to quit and trust that my job would keep us afloat and everything would work out.
It was the toughest decision we ever had to make but also one of the best. We went through a rough period financially for about 6 months but it was well worth. We had a wonderful wedding and a wonderful honeymoon a couple months later. DH now has a wonderful job that he really likes for the same pay but with a normal life.
Sometimes you just need to trust your instinct and trust that everything will work out. I am so happy it worked out for you bc I know how hard it is to make tough decisions during financially tough times.
Life is just too short sometimes to hold back.
