I am going to get an ipad for my soon to be 18 year old nephew and have a couple of questions.

  • For an 18 year old is it best to get the ipad plus wifi and 3G as he will be able to use it on the move
  • For the internet access should I go for 1gb a month or 3 gb as I'm not sure about the sizes - do teenagers download lots of aps and is this what it refers to
  • What things do I need to purchase to make it work at first - any tips on basic extras that I should get.

Thats it for now and thanks for your help.

Wow, Tina, I wish you were my Aunty :rotfl:

Not sure about the answers to your questions as I'm really not that technically minded - I tend to ask DH ;)

Lifted directly from my reply on the main iPad thread:

If you think he'll want to use it away from wifi then I would go for the 3G model - 3g tariffs in this country are on a 1 month basis so you don't have to worry about signing up for a 12 month contract and then find he doesn't use it like that.

For internet access, I would get 1gb and see how he goes. If he uses that up then you can always upgrade Jim the next month. That 1gb is only for 3G anyway so it depends how much he uses it away from wifi.

Theres nothing else you need to purchase - you just download iTunes and away you go. Peresonally I've added a case to hep protect it a little (and make it easier to type on by propping it up) and a stand (to use it as a photo frame) but neither of those are required.

You'll also need to consider the storage - if he has a lot of pictures and music to put on it then 16gb may not be enough. As a guide, i have about 1900 songs, 4400 pictures and a coupke of pages worth of apps on mine and am using 16gb

Thanks for your info, I really appreciated it. Have done a bit of research today but am not technically minded in the slightest so am still confused. My next plan to is launch myself into the nearest Apple shop and have a play.

When we bought the IPAD we decided to go with the wifi version then buy a MIFI that will support up to 5 wireless devices. The MIFI costs £50, we just thought it was more flexible. The IPAD comes with everything you need however I would suggest a case, we bought the incase one.

I have always found staff in the apple store very helpful, so hopefully you will get good advice when you go there
