Hi
A couple weeks ago, DM had her septic tank filled with dirt and hooked up to the city sewer system. Ok, we have had some rain and the hole that was covered up where the septic tank is has sunken in. She has called the septic company for almost a week and no one has called her back. We have 2 dogs and my DD7 could fall in it. I am going to call tomorrow or better yet go by there in person. My question: has this happened to you? If so, did the people who covered it up come back out? If I called the city inspector who had to come out before they covered all things back up, would he make them cover it up with more dirt? Thanks in advance.

Well, I called Codes and Compliances and left a message about my dilemma, I then called the septic tank company that did the work 1 last time and informed them that I had called C&C and the other neighbors that still had septic tanks I would tell them to stay away from their company since they were so unprofessional not to do the job right the first time and then not call DM and myself back after we left messages. So later that day, the receptionist from the septic tank called and you would think someone peed in her cornflakes with her aggravated attitude. She said they would be out the next day to come refill the hole. She didn't say sorry for the inconvience or sorry no one called, so I told her that whoever picks up the messages needs to learn how to return phone calls especially after all the money they charged. I know it wasn't her fault that they didn't do it right, but good customer service means if your company messed up even if it wasn't you, needs to apologize.
They came the next mornimg and filled in the hole and I asked them to fill it in and then leave some extra dirt on top instead of trying to make it even with the rest of the ground, which they had done last time.
It took over a week and me telling them I called C&C for them to call back, another lack in customer service. :confused3

My DH is a Engineer and Licensed Land Surveyor in MA and I read him your Thread and he said to call the City Inspector and/or the BOARD OF HEALTH and have the clerk read you the by-laws regarding this!!! Tell the clerk that you have made several attempts to call and no one has returned your call and this situation could become hazardous not only to DM, you and your family, even someone simply cutting through the yard.

They generally have very early office hours, call first thing in the a.m.!

In MA, they remove the tank, crush it and have the hole all filled in!!! (DH was just wondering if the tank was still in the ground?)

Good Luck, do not wait on this for those other people..follow up before there is an accident.

Hi
Thanks for quick reply. The septic tank is still in the ground but they drained it then filled it with dirt then filled the hole that had the septic tank and it is a big one with dirt. But I will call the City Inspector in the morning.

When I had a septic tank put in years ago, they left a big mound of dirt over it just for that purpose, because it would sink in.

It is like it wasn't enough dirt. When they covered the hole, they evened everything out with the rest of the yard, but now, it is caving in.

Ok, a little science lesson, they put the dirt on top and filled it up. When the rain came it filled up the hole and the dirt particles shifted around and became more compacted and settled. This is completly normal. You will need some more dirt.

I learned Earth Science in 9th grade. :confused3 I know it needs more dirt, but my thing is with the company who did the work not calling back and being totally unprofessional and the possibilty of my DD and dogs falling in.

I know mylilnikita personally by the way. :wave2: It's me, Lisa. :teeth: She is a smart cookie and very nice, too. I would worry, too, if you say it is a danger to your dogs and daughter and I know she is not one to exaggerate. I would be very mad if I hired someone to do something and didn't get back to me over a major concern like your's.

I had a septic system at my old house so I know how it is. Just recently, too, I have dealt with a landscaper which is not the same situation, but he basically didn't do things correctly and didn't even answer his phones or messages so we had to get the authorities involved.

T., you might want to check the NN city website: http://www2.ci.newport-news.va.us/newport-news/residents.htm The Codes Compliance department would be perfect: http://www.newport-news.va.us/codes/contact.htm You can even make a report online.

GL :wizard: and see you soon!

grlpwrd- :wave2: This is why you rock girl!! I am going to hit the website now, thanks for the link, wasn't sure which place to contact. Thanks Lisa!!!
