DD is turning 7 on Tuesday & wants to take a special treat into school. Problem is...our school does not allow junk food. No cookies, brownies, cupcakes, candy, etc. Carrot sticks just don't sound like a fun birthday treat.
I need ideas, quick. Oh, and it would be great if they were store-bought or quick & easy. I'm not very good in the kitchen.

Thanks!!

Hmmmm....how about cheese cubes and crackers (to make it special you could get those cute cheese slices that are shaped like stars and moons though they are pretty expensive)? Or popcorn (you could mix it with dried fruit bits and make a "mix" in cute little bags--that's what we did for DS birthday when his school didn't allow cupcakes and so on). You could give each kid a sparkly pencil or something if that's allowed.
Happy birthday to your daughter!

How about apple slices (I have seen large bags of them in the store in the produce section) with apple dip, the kind made with cream cheese might be able to be passed off as healthy, not sure of the recipe, but know it tastes great!

Popcorn or Cracker Jacks (or other similar treat) is fun. Fresh fruit would also be good -- strawberries, grapes, watermellon are all tasty and kids tend to like them. Raisins. Nuts. How about mini muffins -- blueberry ones or another type that your school would allow.

As another poster said, something non-edible like pencils or other party favors can be fun and last longer than food, too. LOL! I hope your daughter has a wonderful birthday!

DD loves those.....the kind we usually buy comes with little pkgs of carmel dip. (Hey, at least the apples are healthy :thumbsup2 )

I wanted to do little goodie bags with pencils, stickers & such but she wasn't too sure, she really wanted a snack. If all else fails....his is our Plan B.

Great Ideas everyone....keep 'em coming.

My dd loves to have fruit pieces such as strawberries, grapes, cantaloupe, pineapple with the "dip" like McKelly mentions.
She also loves crackers, cheese and garlic sausage or mini muffins that we bake at home.
I too find it hard to find "real" healthy snacks when there is so much of the supposed "healthy" processed snacks available and our school is nut free!

Here's a no-fail idea for children...

Why not skip the food and pass out pencils for everyone?

If you have a Holcomb's in your area you can generally find some fun pencils there. The store caters mostly to those in the education profession but is open to all. A big hit with elementary aged children are those pencils that say "First Graders are Number 1" (or whatever grade she is in--I'd assume seven years is first grade).

Our school recently one an award as one of the healthiest schools in the nation and I was very happy that our principal came out in the newspaper and said that he would not ban cupcakes or treats on a kids birthday- he said "telling a kid to bring in fruit or veggies for their birthdays is just mean". He came to a PTA meeting and talked about how schools are going overboard with the healthy stuff and they are taking the fun out of every activity that kids enjoyed overthe years. Our cafeteria serves healthy food and the district got rid of the soda and snapple machines in the Jr and Sr high (they were neverin the grade schools) and at class parties they still serve cupcakes and chips but they also have a healthy choice there lie a fruit platter and kids can choose what they want- and many actually do take the fruit but they can also take a handful of chips with it. Even with that we ranked one ofhte healthiest school so I think that the school that just ban all fun treats for birthday and 3 class parties a year are way off the mark. How about giving a little less homework each night and having the kids actually ride bikes and run around outside!

First, I hate this rule.

Second, how about fruit kabobs? My kiddos always think these are fun.

Our school did that a few years ago, but a few months later, they softened up on the only healthy treats for birthdays thing and allowed kids to bring what they wanted. My kids' birthdays fell during the time when they were supposed to bring healthy food only and we were approved to bring soft pretzels.

I was going to post this exact thing, including the hate part.;)

If you don't want to do kabobs, you could just do a fruit tray.

We need to stay in a healthy guideline and a nut free guideline as well, and believe it or not, I was able to make homemade chocolate covered pretzels...
I used Giradelli dark chocolate and regular sized twist pretzels and sprinkled a tiny bit of colored sprinkles for fun and put 3 in a cello bag with colored ribbons tied for fun.

If not, then my kids and their classes do love the fruit kabobs!

Yep, that's the problem. Her birthday is early in the year & they're still cracking down on the health food craze.

Funny part is....you should see the lunch menu this week:
Mon ~ Nachos Grande
Tues ~ Cheese Sticks w/ Marinara sauce
Wed ~ Corn Dogs
Thurs ~ Hot Ham & Cheese Sandwich on Soft Pretzel Bun
Fri ~ Pizza Hut Pizza

This is healthy??? :confused3 Funny how you can feed my kid Nachos for lunch, but she can't have a chocolate chip cookie on her birthday? Oh well.

Thanks again for all the ideas ~ I'm going to give her all her options when she gets home this afternoon.

Our school is "healthy" too. We are not allowed to bring in ice cream, but frozen yogurt is ok. Maybe you can go to TCBY and see if they have treats?
