Any ideas on how I can get about 10+ pounds of food for my service dog somewhere between AKL (4 days) and Disney Wonder for the 4-day cruise (5/04) portion of my land/sea/land (3-days Dolphin) vacation? The transfer from AKL to ship is provided in the package.... by whom I don't know. I won't have access to a car and toting a whole vacation of dry dog food around is out of the question. Any ideas? Delivery? Special cruise diet? I know that service dogs have occasionally been sighted on cruises and DCL has already prepared for his...well, you know..... But the food angle is still a mystery...Any help from those of you experienced cruisers would be appreciated...

I believe that the Disney Kennel Clubs should be able to help you with this. They are located at the entrances to all four of the main Disney theme parks and are full boarding locations. You should probably be able to purchase your needed dog food without leaving Disney property.

How about sending the dog food to AKL a week before, so it's there when you arrive. I've seen others post that they send snacks & other stuff just before, so their package is there for them when they check in. I've seen other posters say they've used Net Grocer to ship food to the resorts. Maybe that would work for you! If it's Dry food, it's not going to go bad.

Good luck!

videogal1 - bring along a very old horse. The DCL chefs are very accommodating...

BD: That was not a nice thing to say.

Videogal1: Have you called DCL about the problem? Since you are doing the package, maybe you could check a bag of food inside a box with a luggage tag. Then when you are picked up for the land portion, they can transfer the food package and hold it at the terminal until you board the ship, then they'll deliver it to your room? Or maybe DCL will take care of getting the food and having it delivered to the ship for you? They will get special needs food for passengers....they might be able to do that for you. Call Disney Cruise. I bet they will know just what to do.

Maybe they can have it loaded on from one of their suppliers for you. Since it is a service dog, a necessity, they would I am sure try to be as accomodating as possible.

Try shirley from perfect gift if DCL can't help.

BD,

I thought it was funny

You could check the http://www.netgrocer.com website and see if you can have some dog food delivered on a particular day. That way you can set it up to be delivered perhaps the day before you leave AKL and then you would have it to take on the cruise. Or if you needed it sooner than that, you could set it up to be delivered the day of your arrival at ALK.

Definately call DCL and inquire -- because there are customs regulations on "open" food and I recall a note somewhere about not packing any food in your checked luggage because of the new airport security machines..... I'm sure they would have the knowledge on how to accomodate your needs.

BD, you're crackin' me up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Debbie:)

Hurrah!
What Champions you all are!! Very funny, too. My biggest fears in packing dry food for the flight (how much luggage can one woman + service dog + electric scooter get away with, anyway?) are that one of the sniffer dogs will alert on my Cash's food stash (they're not supposed to) or that I'll have to pay outrageous excess baggage fees....Your idea about Net Grocer is top on my list. It would be a huge relief to have a bag of dog food (or one small pony...ha!) waiting for us at Pop Century, then AKL, then the Wonder, then the Dolphin. No need to bother the chefs at all. I will check, too with DCL about the annoying thought that the dry food will be gassed at deBARKation (Premier Cruise Lines gassed all luggage the night before returning to Florida, does DCL?) or that some sort of dog food embargo exists that will necessitate a dietary switch to canned food...ugh! more weight, refrigeration, messy cans.....(YUM, says Cash......)

As for eliminating the burning question for those of you who expressed interest....DCL has offered Cash a litterbox in the cabin (NO WAY!) or an area somewhere on deck (unofficial poop deck) away from human habitation...Never been on DCL ships so I can't imagine where. He will be practicing a more "targeted" technique in the next several months...If he only knew.... Oh, the life of a service dog...We have a two-week stay at WDW in January to use as a dry run and get the wrinkles ....well, you get the idea...

You'll need to let us know how the "target" practice goes and where is the "poop" deck.

Good luck with the target practice!

I know to you that Cash is not a breed but a Fur Child but I was wondering what he is.
We have two Labs who are super smart but they do their business when it strikes their fancy as long as it is outside.
As for my vote I would call Shirley and have her make Cash a gift basket with food and biscuits to be delivered to your room.

I bet it is a great trip for the both of you. Please make some pictures to share with us on your return.

On the matter of service dogs having to "target" their deposits...just a few weeks ago Universal Studios, Hollywood opened what they claimed was the first service dog rest stop at a theme park. I don't know if the claim was true or not, but it seemed like such a logical idea (though a little more challenging on a ship!). I hope, Videogal, that for your sake and Cash's and all the wonderful service dogs out there, more places will consider this to be the norm.
